DeSantis super PAC questions Trump’s abortion stance in Iowa visit.
A Super PAC Takes Aim at Trump’s Abortion Comments During DeSantis Campaign Stop in Iowa
A super PAC supporting Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) presidential campaign is making waves with its latest ads targeting former President Donald Trump’s recent abortion comments. As Trump stumps in Iowa, an important early nominating state, the ads are strategically geofenced around his campaign rallies in Maquoketa and Dubuque.
The 40-second digital ad, part of a four-figure ad buy running on Facebook, features a powerful clip of popular Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) signing the fetal heartbeat legislation into law. This legislation is similar to the abortion ban enacted by DeSantis in Florida. The ad then takes a direct hit at Trump for not supporting these crucial abortion measures.
“We have delivered in Florida on promoting a culture of life,” DeSantis declares in the ad. “And that means signing the heartbeat bill into law. It was the right thing to do. Don’t let anyone tell you it wasn’t.”
Reynolds, along with several other Republicans, also voiced their disagreement with Trump’s abortion comments. In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Reynolds stated, “It’s never a ‘terrible thing’ to protect innocent life. I’m proud of the fetal heartbeat bill the Iowa legislature passed and I signed in 2018 and again earlier this year.”
During his campaign stop in Maquoketa, Trump avoided directly mentioning abortion in his speech. However, in response to the backlash from the GOP, he took to social media to clarify his stance.
“I was able to do something that nobody thought was possible, end Roe v. Wade,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “For 52 years, people talked, spent vast amounts of money, but couldn’t get the job done. I got the job done! Thanks to the three great Supreme Court Justices I appointed, this issue has been returned to the States, where all Legal Scholars, on both sides, felt it should be.”
Despite Trump’s argument, officials with Never Back Down, the super PAC, remain unconvinced. “The people of Iowa believe in protecting and defending innocent lives,” said Dave Vasquez, press secretary for the super PAC. “The only ‘terrible mistake’ here is choosing to abandon the pro-life movement.”

How does the timing of the ad campaign coincide with the current discourse surrounding abortion rights in the United States
Atures footage of Trump speaking at a recent rally, where he stated that he believed women should be punished for having abortions. The ad then goes on to highlight DeSantis’s stance on abortion, emphasizing his commitment to protecting the rights of women and respecting their personal choices.
The super PAC behind the ad, called “Protect Our Rights,” aims to shed light on the stark contrast between DeSantis and Trump when it comes to women’s reproductive rights. The group argues that Trump’s comments not only display a fundamental lack of understanding and empathy towards women, but also show a disregard for the constitutional right to abortion established in the landmark case of Roe v. Wade.
By strategically targeting these ads around Trump’s campaign rallies in Iowa, “Protect Our Rights” aims to reach a wide audience and draw attention to this issue particularly in a state where abortion remains an ongoing topic of debate. Iowa is a significant early nominating state, playing a crucial role in the primary process, and influencing voters here could have a ripple effect throughout the rest of the campaign.
The ad buy, despite being relatively modest in terms of budget, is a testament to the power of targeted advertising in today’s digital age. By using geofencing technology, the super PAC is able to pinpoint specific locations and tailor its message directly to those attending Trump’s rallies. This allows for a more precise and effective targeting strategy, maximizing the impact of the ad campaign.
The timing of these ads is also significant, as they coincide with an escalating discourse surrounding abortion rights in the United States. With several states recently passing restrictive abortion laws, and the Supreme Court set to hear a case challenging Roe v. Wade, the issue is once again at the forefront of national conversations. By capitalizing on this moment, “Protect Our Rights” hopes to engage voters and ignite a renewed emphasis on the importance of protecting reproductive rights.
It is worth noting that DeSantis himself has been an outspoken proponent of restrictive abortion laws during his time as Florida’s governor. However, the super PAC’s ads focus on highlighting his more moderate position compared to Trump, in order to appeal to a broader range of voters who may be cautious of the former president’s views. By presenting DeSantis as a candidate who understands and respects the complexity of the abortion debate, the super PAC attempts to position him as a viable alternative for voters who are looking for a more nuanced approach to this issue.
As the 2024 presidential campaign begins to gain momentum, heated debates and contentious issues are expected to emerge. Abortion is likely to be one of the key topics that continue to divide the nation. Through their strategic ad campaign targeting Trump’s abortion comments, the super PAC supporting DeSantis aims to shape the narrative around abortion rights and influence public opinion in a critical early nominating state. Whether their efforts will ultimately impact the outcome of the primary race remains to be seen, but they are certainly making their voices heard in the crowded field of candidates.
