Susanna Gibson Removes Prominent Endorsers from Campaign Site Amid Porn Scandal
Embattled Virginia Democrat Susanna Gibson, who hosted live streams in which she solicited tips by performing sex acts and promising to urinate on camera, this week removed the endorsements page from her campaign website, a Washington Free Beacon review of the Internet Archive found.
Gibson’s website once featured endorsements from more than 25 current and former Virginia lawmakers and organizations, including Democratic former governor Ralph Northam and Democratic congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. As of Thursday morning, they are all gone.
It is unclear whether Gibson’s backers have rescinded their endorsements. But the reshuffling of Gibson’s campaign site suggests her sex scandal may cost her Democratic support.
Gibson’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Democrats were reluctant to defend Gibson’s behavior after her pornographic performances surfaced. Just days after reports circulated about Gibson’s side gig as an amateur pornographer, Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) said he only “met Ms. Gibson once” and wouldn’t “weigh in” until more details were known.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.) said the reports “really took me aback.” Spanberger, who aside from endorsing Gibson also campaigned for her earlier this month, said only that the news was “a shocking, terrible situation.”
Gibson has pledged to stay in the race after video clips and screenshots of her performances on the X-rated website Chaturbate circulated through the media. Both Gibson and her attorney, Daniel Watkins, have claimed sharing any of her videos is criminal. Watkins said earlier this month that he was working with law enforcement, including the FBI, to “bring the wrongdoers to justice.” He did not respond to a request for comment on the status of that investigation.
From at least May 2022 to September of the same year, Gibson, often with her husband, hosted shows on Chaturbate. Gibson in July 2022 announced her campaign for the Virginia State House.
Republicans hold a narrow majority in Virginia’s House of Delegates. Gibson’s district includes part of Richmond and its suburbs and is considered a pivotal race in the upcoming November state elections. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R.) has raised more than $12 million for state Republican candidates in the race thus far.
Still, Gibson is not without allies. Washington Monthly editor Matthew Cooper in a Sept. 13 column urged the embattled Democrat to “stand her ground,” noting that “lots of Americans record themselves having sex.” Five days after the Washington Post reported on Gibson’s extracurricular activities, Twitter user @CABlueBlaze wrote that Gibson “is looking great on the fundraising front and has out-raised her opponent!”
