In his opening remarks on Wednesday, UN⁢ Secretary-General António Guterres declared, “humanity⁢ has ‌opened the gates ‍of‍ hell,” emphasizing the urgent need for action as the future of the world hangs in the balance.

“Our focus⁢ here is on climate solutions – and our task is urgent. Horrendous heat is having horrendous effects. Distraught farmers watching crops carried away by‌ floods, sweltering temperatures spawning disease⁤ and thousands fleeing in fear as historic fires rage. Climate action is⁢ dwarfed by the scale of the challenge,” Guterres passionately ⁢stated.

The Climate Ambition Summit, hosted by the U.N., aimed to elevate ambitions ⁣in addressing climate change and served as a crucial mid-point review of the “2030 agenda.”

These summits are part of ⁢a global effort ⁣to tackle climate change and transition away from fossil fuels,‌ with the ‌goal of⁢ building ‍momentum and achieving significant progress.

“We must make up for time lost‌ to foot-dragging, arm-twisting and the naked greed of entrenched⁣ interests raking in ‍billions‍ from fossil ‍fuels,” Guterres continued, highlighting the need to ⁣overcome obstacles and prioritize the planet’s well-being.

Guterres also called upon major emitters to intensify their efforts in reducing emissions and⁤ urged ⁢wealthy nations to provide‍ greater support to emerging economies.

The summit brought together representatives from 200 countries in New York, although only 34 nations and 7 non-governmental bodies were granted speaking slots.

Notably absent from the list of speakers were some of ‍the world’s largest polluters,⁤ including China, ‍India, and ‍the United States. However, President ‍Biden chose to ‌send U.S. climate envoy John Kerry in his place, opting not⁢ to attend personally.

It is worth noting that the 32 national leaders⁣ who spoke at the summit and the countries they represent ‍account‌ for just 11% ‌of the world’s carbon dioxide pollution.
