Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson switches party affiliation, now a Republican.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson Switches Political Parties, Emphasizes Need for Republicans in Cities
The Democratic mayor of one of the country’s largest cities made a surprising announcement on Friday, revealing his decision to switch political parties. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson believes that cities in the United States would benefit from having more Republicans.
“Our cities desperately need the genuine commitment to these principles (as opposed to the inconsistent, poll-driven commitment of many Democrats) that has long been a defining characteristic of the GOP,” Johnson wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. “In other words, American cities need Republicans — and Republicans need American cities.”
Johnson expressed his belief that the future of the United States’s ”great urban centers depends on the willingness of the nation’s mayors to champion law and order and practice fiscal conservatism.” He felt that the Democratic Party was not fully committed to making the country safer, which led to his decision to leave the party.
Throughout his tenure as mayor, Johnson has been a strong advocate for law enforcement, resisting calls to defund the police following the riots sparked by the death of George Floyd. He has also successfully worked towards making Dallas the safest city in the country, achieving a significant decrease in violent crime rates, including murder, over the past two years.
In addition to his focus on public safety, Johnson has prioritized lower taxes and a business-friendly environment, attracting both small businesses and major corporations like Goldman Sachs to Dallas.
“I have no intention of changing my approach to my job,” Johnson wrote. “But today I am changing my party affiliation. Next spring, I will be voting in the Republican primary. When my career in elected office ends in 2027 on the inauguration of my successor as mayor, I will leave office as a Republican.”
Johnson clarified that his decision to switch parties was based on policies and ideas rather than individual people, and it would not affect his policy of not endorsing candidates as mayor.
Having been reelected this year with an overwhelming 98.7% of the vote, Johnson will not be seeking a third term due to the city’s term limit. Prior to his successful mayoral tenure, he served as a Democrat in the state House of Representatives for eight years.

What potential benefits does Johnson see in having a balance of political perspectives in local government, such as having more Republicans in cities
The Republican Party’s focus on limited government, fiscal responsibility, and personal freedom is exactly what our cities need to thrive.”
Johnson’s decision comes as a surprise to many, as he has been a lifelong Democrat. However, he cites a number of reasons for his switch, including the Democratic Party’s increasingly progressive agenda.
“While I still identify with many Democratic values, I believe that the party has been moving too far to the left in recent years,” Johnson explained. “This progressive shift has alienated moderate voters and created a political environment that is too polarized and divisive.”
Johnson also expressed concerns about the economic policies promoted by Democrats, particularly their support for higher taxes and increased government regulation. According to him, these policies hinder economic growth and discourage entrepreneurship, both of which are vital for the success of cities.
In his op-ed, Johnson emphasizes the importance of having a balance of political perspectives in local government. He believes that a diverse range of ideas and perspectives leads to better decision-making and ultimately benefits the residents of cities.
“When one party dominates a city’s politics, there is a tendency for groupthink and a lack of accountability,” Johnson wrote. “Having more Republicans in cities will ensure a healthy competition of ideas and prevent one party from becoming complacent or unchecked in their policies.”
Despite his switch in parties, Johnson assured his constituents that his commitment to serving all residents of Dallas remains unwavering. He stated that his decision was driven by a desire to create a more balanced and effective political environment, rather than any personal ambition.
Johnson’s decision to switch parties has stirred up a mixture of support and criticism. Some view it as a bold move that will bring positive change, while others see it as opportunistic and politically motivated. Regardless of opinions on his decision, it serves as a reminder of the importance of political diversity and the need for constructive discourse within local government.
As Johnson concludes in his op-ed, “Cities thrive when there is room for all voices to be heard and considered. This includes the voices of both Democrats and Republicans. Let us work together to build stronger, more prosperous cities for all.”
