Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has announced a major political shift, leaving the Democratic Party and joining the Republican Party.
Mayor Johnson made the announcement to the press on Friday, declaring, “America’s Cities Need Republicans, and I’m Becoming One.” He also revealed his intention to vote in the Republican primary next year and to leave office as a Republican when his term ends in 2027.
“Today I am changing my party affiliation. Next spring, I will be voting in the Republican primary,” Johnson wrote. “When my career in elected office ends in 2027 on the inauguration of my successor as mayor, I will leave office as a Republican.”
The mayor was reelected in May as a Democrat.
The Texas Democratic Party leaders released a statement criticizing the mayor’s decision, calling him “dishonest” for switching parties after being reelected.
The party also expressed that they were not surprised by the decision, as they believed Johnson had Republican ideologies despite presenting himself as a Democrat.
“Given his long-standing affinity with Republican leaders and ideology… this announcement is neither surprising nor unwelcome,” the party wrote in the statement. “This feeble excuse for democratic representation will fit right in with Republicans — and we are grateful that he can no longer tarnish the brand and values of the Texas Democratic Party.”
Many Democrat leaders criticized Johnson on X, the social media formerly known as Twitter.
Representative John Bryant (D-Texas) responded to the decision, agreeing with the party leaders and stating, “Switching parties? I didn’t know he was a Democrat.”
Johnson explained that Democrats tend to prioritize liberal policies in cities, while he believes in focusing on public safety, fiscal restraint, and creating a business-friendly environment.
“Unfortunately, many of our cities are in disarray. Mayors and other local elected officials have failed to make public safety a priority or to exercise fiscal restraint,” he said. “Most of these local leaders are proud Democrats who view cities as laboratories for liberalism rather than as havens for opportunity and free enterprise.”
Johnson’s vision for Dallas aligns with the Republican Party, emphasizing support for law enforcement, lower property taxes, and fostering a business-friendly atmosphere.

How do citizens of Dallas view Mayor Johnson’s party switch and how does it affect their trust in him as a leader?
From the Democratic Party also expressed his disappointment in Mayor Johnson’s decision. He tweeted, “It’s sad to see Eric Johnson betray the trust of the voters who elected him as a Democrat. We need strong leaders who are committed to progressive values, not those who flip-flop for their own political gain.”
Additionally, some citizens of Dallas have voiced their concerns about the mayor’s switch in party affiliation. They feel that this decision undermines the trust that was placed in him by the voters and raises questions about his true values and priorities.
On the other hand, many Republicans have welcomed Mayor Johnson into their party with open arms. They see his decision as a recognition of the alignment between his values and those of the Republican Party. They believe that his switch will strengthen their party’s presence in the city of Dallas and will bring a fresh perspective to Republican politics.
Mayor Johnson has not provided specific reasons for his switch in party affiliation, but he has alluded to a growing dissatisfaction with the direction of the Democratic Party. He believes that the Republican Party better represents the needs and interests of America’s cities, and he wants to be a part of the positive change that he believes the Republican Party can bring.
This switch in party affiliation by Mayor Eric Johnson is significant for both the city of Dallas and the larger political landscape in Texas. It raises important questions about party loyalty, ideological consistency, and the role of elected officials in representing the interests of their constituents. As Mayor Johnson moves forward as a Republican, it remains to be seen how his decision will impact his ability to govern effectively and fulfill his promises to the people of Dallas. However, one thing is clear – this announcement has sparked a lively debate and has drawn attention to the ongoing struggle for political power and representation in America.
