Shimano Recalls 760,000 Bike Cranksets in the U.S. and Canada
In a recent announcement, cycling company Shimano has issued a recall for approximately 760,000 bike cranksets in the United States and Canada. This recall comes as a result of a crash hazard that has already caused several reported injuries.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that the crank parts in question can separate and break, posing a significant risk of accidents. So far, there have been over 4,500 incidents of cranksets separating, leading to six injuries including bone fractures, joint displacement, and lacerations.
The recall specifically affects Shimano Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, and FC-R9100P 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech Road Cranksets that were manufactured in Japan before July 2019.
The affected cranksets were sold individually as well as on bicycles from other companies, including Trek and Specialized.
To identify the recalled crank parts, consumers should check the production date and two-letter codes. In the United States, where approximately 680,000 cranksets are being recalled, these products were sold at various stores nationwide between January 2012 and August of this year.
If you own one of the recalled cranksets, it is crucial to stop using it immediately and contact an authorized Shimano dealer for an inspection. Only cranksets showing signs of bonding separation or delamination will be eligible for a free replacement and installation.
Starting from October 1, affected consumers can bring their bikes to participating retailers, as stated on Shimano’s website.
“Shimano will replace any cranks that fail the inspection process,” the company assured in a recent announcement. “There is no need for further action for cranks that pass the inspection process.”
