The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) was less than impressed with the mass baptism and promptly sent a strongly worded letter of reprimand to Coach Freeze, as well as head baseball coach Butch Thompson and head basketball coach Bruce Pearl. FFRF staff attorney Chris Line argued that the coaches’ involvement in a religious event crossed a major line.
According to Line, “Auburn University is a public university, not a religious one. It is inappropriate and unconstitutional for university employees to use their university position to organize, promote, or participate in a religious worship event.”
FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor further criticized Auburn University, stating, “These ongoing and repeated constitutional violations at the university create a coercive environment that excludes those students who don’t subscribe to the Christian views being pushed onto players by their coaches.”
The atheist group called for a re-education of the coaches on their “constitutional duties” and suggested that some staff members be let go. Gaylor also urged the university to terminate the team chaplains, arguing that their presence indicated an inappropriate relationship between Auburn University and Christian evangelists.
Despite the backlash, Line admitted that there was no evidence of coercion, preventing the situation from escalating into a lawsuit. However, the FFRF’s concerns remain.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey swiftly came to Auburn University’s defense, emphasizing her support for religious liberty. In a social media post, she declared, ”As governor, I can assure you Alabama will never be intimidated by out-of-state interest groups dedicated to destroying our nation’s religious heritage.”
Auburn University responded to the FFRF’s letter by stating that they are evaluating its contents and offering no further comment at this time.
