Author of School Districts’ Most-Challenged LGBT Book Speaks Out: ‘Parental Rights Really Anger Me’
It’s quite telling when someone who can’t even figure out their own gender wants to impose their views on millions of parents.
Alex Gino, the author of the highly controversial novel “Melissa,” which centers around a boy named George who identifies as a girl, has faced bans in four U.S. states. According to Yahoo News, the book topped the American Library Association’s list of most challenged books from 2018 to 2020.
The book was originally published as “George” but was later renamed “Melissa.”
BookLooks, a website that reviews children’s books, summarized the concerns in “Melissa” as including discussions on transitioning, non-sexual nudity, and alternate sexualities.

One passage in the book describes George’s feelings while taking a bath, highlighting the internal struggle with gender identity. According to the Des Moines Register, the passage reads: “She took off her shirt while the tub filled waiting until the last possible moment to take off her pants and underwear. She immersed her body in the warm water and tried not to think about what was between her legs, but there it was, bobbing in front of her.”
Gino, who identifies as “nonbinary,” expressed his frustration with parental rights, stating that human rights should take precedence. He believes that withholding information from young people hinders their ability to navigate the world. Gino also mentioned that if his book continues to face challenges, it only motivates him to write more stories about queer and trans kids who thrive and have a supportive community.

According to the LGBT Foundation, being nonbinary means not fitting within the traditional gender binary of male or female. It’s a way of understanding gender beyond these categories.
However, allowing the most confused individuals to shape children’s understanding of the world instead of their own parents, who care for them deeply, seems counterproductive.
As parents, it is our responsibility to guide our children towards adulthood and equip them with the necessary tools to navigate life’s challenges. This includes monitoring TV show ratings, implementing safeguards on their devices, and ensuring they don’t have access to books that may perpetuate confusion.
Regardless of what a nonbinary author may think, the final say in raising a child rests with those who will support them throughout their journey into adulthood.

Is it possible to strike a balance between teaching tolerance and acceptance and respecting parental rights when it comes to age-appropriate books
Controlling internet access, and yes, selecting age-appropriate books for them to read. Parental rights should not be undermined or dismissed in favor of someone else’s agenda.
While it is important to promote diversity and inclusion, it is equally important to respect the rights of parents to decide what is appropriate for their children. Children are impressionable and easily influenced, and it is crucial that they receive guidance from their parents, who know them best and have their best interests at heart.
The argument of “human rights” does not hold up when it comes to parental rights. Parents have the right to raise their children according to their own beliefs and values, and it is not the place of authors or activists to interfere with that right. Pushing a particular agenda onto children without the consent of their parents is both disrespectful and unethical.
Moreover, it is questionable whether books such as ”Melissa” are suitable for children in the first place. Discussions on transitioning, non-sexual nudity, and alternate sexualities are complex and sensitive topics that should be approached with caution, especially when it comes to young readers. Children should be allowed to enjoy their innocence and not be exposed to mature subjects before they are developmentally ready.
It is also worth considering that there are many other books available that promote diversity and inclusion in a more age-appropriate manner. These books can educate children about different cultures, races, and backgrounds in a way that is respectful to both children and parents. It is possible to teach tolerance and acceptance without crossing the line and infringing upon parental rights.
In conclusion, while authors like Alex Gino may have their own beliefs and views, they should not be given free rein to impose them on young readers or undermine parental rights. Parents have a responsibility to protect and guide their children, and it is crucial that their rights are respected. Instead of challenging and banning books, it would be more productive to encourage a balanced and age-appropriate representation of diversity and inclusion in children’s literature.
