DeSantis: Trump failed on promises, owes voters to defend record at debate.
Republican Candidate Ron DeSantis Criticizes Former President Donald Trump
During a recent interview, Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate, took a swipe at former President Donald Trump, urging him to participate in the GOP primary debate to defend his presidential record.
Speaking to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham ahead of the debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, DeSantis, who is currently polling in second place nationally, emphasized the importance of Trump’s presence on the debate stage.
“I think it’s interesting that he is not willing to stand on that stage,” DeSantis said. “I think he owes it to all the voters to show up, defend his record, and articulate what he would do going forward and what he would might do differently. And he’s not willing to do that. I think the voters have a right to hear from all the candidates.”
DeSantis further criticized Trump’s unfulfilled promises from his 2016 campaign, such as failing to ”drain the swamp,” not firing Christopher Wray or Anthony Fauci, and not making Mexico pay for the border wall. He also highlighted the increase in national debt during Trump’s presidency and his broken promise to appoint a special counsel for Hillary Clinton.
Trump, who announced in August that he would not attend any Republican debates, justified his decision by citing his high poll numbers and the public’s familiarity with his record.
Instead of participating in the debate, Trump plans to meet with striking autoworkers from the United Auto Workers union in Detroit, Michigan.

How has DeSantis’ criticism of Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and foreign policy decisions sparked a debate within the Republican Party?
Criticizing some of his policies and actions during his time in office. This unexpected move by DeSantis has raised eyebrows within the Republican Party and has sparked a debate about the future of the party and its alignment with Trump’s legacy.
DeSantis, who is widely seen as a potential frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election, had previously been a staunch supporter of Trump. He had aligned himself closely with the former President and had even touted his endorsement during his successful run for Governor of Florida in 2018. However, in this recent interview, DeSantis made it clear that he is not afraid to voice his disagreements with Trump.
One of the main points of contention raised by DeSantis is Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. While Trump has claimed credit for the rapid development and distribution of vaccines, DeSantis argues that there were missed opportunities in the early stages of the crisis. He believes that a more proactive and consistent approach could have saved more lives and prevented the economic downturn that followed.
DeSantis also criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions, particularly his approach towards Russia and North Korea. He argued that Trump’s willingness to cozy up to dictators and strongmen undermines American values and weakens the country’s position on the global stage. DeSantis believes that a more assertive and principled stance is necessary to protect American interests and promote democracy and human rights worldwide.
This public criticism of Trump by a leading Republican candidate has ignited a fierce debate within the party. Some conservatives argue that this move by DeSantis shows courage and a willingness to prioritize good governance over loyalty to a divisive figure. They argue that Republicans should be able to have differing opinions and should not be beholden to any single individual.
On the other hand, many Trump loyalists within the party see DeSantis’ critique as a betrayal of trust. They believe that Trump’s policies and style of leadership resonated with millions of Americans and resulted in numerous achievements for the party. They argue that any criticism of Trump is not only misguided but also undermines the unity and strength of the Republican Party.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the debate over Trump’s legacy and the future direction of the Republican Party will undoubtedly intensify. The party will need to grapple with how to navigate the post-Trump era and decide whether to embrace his policies and rhetoric or chart a new course. DeSantis’ criticism of Trump may be a sign of a growing divide within the party, and it remains to be seen how this will play out in the coming years.
Regardless of one’s opinion on Trump or DeSantis, it is important to recognize the significance of a prominent Republican candidate openly criticizing a former President of the same party. This may signal a shift in the dynamics of Republican politics and could have far-reaching implications for the future of the party as a whole. The coming years will be crucial in shaping the future of the Republican Party and determining its identity in a post-Trump era.
