NASA astronaut and cosmonauts set new record for longest stay in space, return to Earth.

Record-Breaking⁢ Return: Astronaut ⁢and Cosmonauts Safely Land on Earth After⁤ Yearlong Space Mission

Early Wednesday morning, a NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts⁣ made a triumphant return⁢ to Earth after spending a remarkable year in ⁢space. This historic mission marked the longest single⁢ flight in U.S. space ⁢history, capturing the world’s attention.

During his ​extraordinary stay in space, Rubio completed approximately 5,936 orbits ⁢around Earth,⁢ covering‍ an astonishing distance of approximately 157,412,306 statute miles. To put this into perspective, it’s​ equivalent to embarking ⁣on 328 round trips to‍ the moon⁢ and back!

As a‍ father of ⁤four children, Rubio shared his excitement about reuniting ⁢with his family, stating that “hugging ‌my wife and kids is ⁢going to be paramount. ⁢And I’ll probably‌ focus ⁣on that for the first couple of days.” He also expressed his anticipation of enjoying the tranquility of nature, saying, “We’re blessed enough to have kind of⁢ a quiet backyard.‍ And⁢ I think just going out in the yard and ‌enjoying the trees and the silence. Up here, we ⁤kind of have the constant hum of machinery…​ So I’m looking forward to ⁤just being outside and⁤ enjoying‍ the peace and quiet.”

Despite their rigorous exercise ⁣routine of two⁤ hours ‍per day, ​it will take several months for ⁤Rubio and his fellow crew members to readjust to Earth’s gravity and regain their land legs. Rubio explained that the vestibular system is ⁢the most affected, ⁣and it will take time for their ‌bones and muscles to ⁢adapt⁣ to the demands of standing, walking, and bearing their own ⁤weight.

Following their landing, Rubio will board a NASA Gulfstream jet ​and head home to the U.S. at the ‌Johnson Space Center in ‍Houston. Prokopyev and Petelin, ‍on the other hand, will be flown to Star City near Moscow aboard a Russian jet.

Unexpectedly Extended Stay

The crew’s stay⁣ at the International ⁤Space Station‍ was initially planned for⁣ six months, the standard duration for long-duration missions. However,​ a coolant leak‍ in their‍ spacecraft in ⁣December forced the Russians to​ send a replacement, the Soyuz MS-23, ​in February. This ⁤unforeseen circumstance extended their stay⁤ in space.

During a change-of-command ceremony on Tuesday, Prokopyev handed over the ⁢station manager position to ‌European Space Agency astronaut Andreas ​Mogensen. The incoming crew, consisting of Mogensen, NASA astronauts Loral O’Hara and Jasmin Moghbeli, ⁣Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ‍astronaut Satoshi‍ Furukawa,‍ and ⁢Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko, Konstantin Borisov, and Nikolai⁤ Chub, arrived at the space station on Sept. 15 for Expedition 70.
