According to one British actress, being labeled as “woke” is just as offensive as a racial slur.
Cathy Tyson, in an interview with the Telegraph’s Chris Harvey, discussed the role of race and identity in the entertainment industry and expressed her strong dislike for the term ”woke.”
“To me, ‘woke’ is just as offensive as a racial slur,” shared Tyson, 58, during the interview with the Telegraph — a conservative publication that she admitted she would have never spoken to when she was younger.
She continued, “The terms ‘woke’ and ‘race card’ deeply offend me. The latter is thrown in your face if you criticize anything, while the former is used to undermine progressive ideas.”
Tyson explained, “Even the term ‘white privilege’ is very divisive. I believe in embracing different viewpoints.” She also mentioned that studying English later in life helped her open her mind.
Tyson initially stated that she wouldn’t have agreed to the interview with the Telegraph, a more conservative British outlet.
However, Tyson emphasized the importance of valuing different perspectives, which she learned while studying English at Brunel University in London.
Tyson, who has a mixed-race background, shared that she experienced racism while living in a predominantly white community. She believes in unity and supports casting in films that disregards factors like race, size, and age.
“It’s complex. People of all colors are suffering financially and hunger is prevalent at the moment,” she said. Tyson expressed her support for a more inclusive approach to casting in the film industry.
The term ”woke” has been a topic of debate for several years, with Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy even writing a book titled “Woke, Inc.”
Furthermore, radio personality Howard Stern recently declared himself a “woke motherf***ker.”
