Poll and focus group reveal winner of second GOP primary debate, according to voters.
DeSantis Emerges as Clear Winner in Republican Party Primary Debate
A recent top poll and focus group conducted after the second Republican Party primary debate on Wednesday night revealed that voters overwhelmingly believe that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came out on top.
The 538/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, conducted immediately after the debate, initially showed that voters expected pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy to perform the best, followed by DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. However, after the debate, voters changed their tune and declared DeSantis as the clear winner, with Haley and Ramaswamy following closely behind.
When respondents were asked who performed the best and worst, DeSantis received the highest support.
“DeSantis was again the clear winner: 33 percent of likely Republican voters who watched the debate said he performed the best, and only 5 percent said he performed the worst,” the survey said. “Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley ranked second, with 18 percent rating her as the strongest debater and only 7 percent rating her as the worst.”
The survey also revealed that 15 percent believed Ramaswamy performed the best, while 10 percent thought he performed the worst. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) did not elicit strong opinions either way. According to the poll, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Vice President Mike Pence were considered the worst performers.
In a separate focus group conducted by CNN in Iowa immediately after the debate, the majority of participants agreed that DeSantis emerged as the winner.
During the vote, nine people raised their hands in support of DeSantis, six for Haley, one for Burgum, and one for Ramaswamy. None voted for Christie, Pence, or Scott. When asked who had a bad night, the consensus was Pence, with the moderator acknowledging the unanimous sentiment.
