OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence platform, is about to get even more impressive. The latest update will give it the ability to respond to spoken words and process images. However, there are concerns about potential privacy invasions.
On Monday, OpenAI released the latest version of ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with the application using spoken words and images. The updates will be available to paying users within the next two weeks, with voice functionality limited to the iOS and Android Apps and image processing available on all platforms.
“We’re looking to make ChatGPT easier to use – and more helpful,” said Peter Deng, OpenAI’s vice president of consumer and enterprise product, in an interview with The New York Times.
Users will now be able to have spoken conversations with ChatGPT, which will respond with its own synthetic voice. Additionally, the chatbot can now respond with images, allowing users to upload pictures and receive relevant suggestions.
Despite the exciting updates, some experts question the true value of the new features. Christopher Alexander, chief analytics officer of Pioneer Development Group, commented, “While voice detection and conversational capability sound impressive, it does not really improve the current capabilities of ChatGPT. Essentially you can just dictate your Natural Language Processing commands instead of typing them.”
Alexander also raised concerns about the potential use of ChatGPT as a surveillance tool, as it collects voice data and learns to process voices in detail.
Ziven Havens, policy director at the Bull Moose Project, echoed these concerns, stating that the application could contribute to the collection of unprecedented levels of data on Americans.
In response to these concerns, OpenAI assured users that the synthetic voices used in ChatGPT were created with voice actors they directly worked with, rather than gathering voices from strangers. However, the company did not provide detailed information on how consumer voice inputs will be utilized or how the data will be secured.
