Don Gaetz, a former Republican state Senate president and the father of Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, has exciting news to share. He announced his intention to return to the Florida Senate, a chamber he led from 2012 to 2014.
Gaetz, 75, is running for the state Senate seat currently held by outgoing GOP Senator Doug Broxson. Broxson’s term limit is ending, opening up an opportunity for Gaetz senior to make a comeback.
Gaetz senior is passionate about addressing the cost of living in Florida. He clarified that he has no intention of running for higher office, as his sole political aspiration is to make Florida an affordable state to live in.
“It’s apparent that while we are a low tax state, we are also a high electricity cost, high insurance if you can find it and a high housing cost state,” he said. “High costs, these kitchen table issues, make it hard for people to live here. The state of Florida has to become an affordable state to live in.”
Meanwhile, his son, Matt Gaetz, has been making waves in the political arena. He has been a vocal critic of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and recently announced his intention to file a motion to vacate McCarthy over a spending legislation dispute. This could potentially lead to a vote on whether McCarthy should remain as the speaker. Matt Gaetz has also served in the state House from 2010 to 2016 and is rumored to be a potential candidate for Florida governor in the upcoming 2026 election.
Don Gaetz wants to make it clear that his decision to return to the Florida Senate has no connection to his son’s future plans.
“He’s pushing forward tackling budget and spending problems in Washington and fighting for term limits,” Gaetz [senior] said.

How does Don Gaetz plan to address the cost of living in Florida if elected to the Senate?
Don Gaetz Announces Candidacy for Florida Senate Seat
Former Republican state Senate president Don Gaetz has recently declared his intention to return to the Florida Senate. Gaetz, who led the chamber from 2012 to 2014, hopes to secure the seat currently held by outgoing GOP Senator Doug Broxson, whose term limit is ending.
At the age of 75, Gaetz senior is driven by a passion for addressing the cost of living in Florida. He emphasized that his political aspirations are solely focused on making the state more affordable for its residents. Gaetz recognizes that while Florida may be known as a low-tax state, it still struggles with high electricity costs, expensive insurance, and soaring housing prices. These “kitchen table issues” make it difficult for people to afford living in the state. Gaetz believes that Florida must become an affordable place to reside.
Meanwhile, Gaetz’s son, Matt Gaetz, has been making waves in the political arena himself. He has been a vocal critic of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and recently expressed his intention to file a motion to vacate McCarthy over a spending legislation dispute. This could potentially trigger a vote on McCarthy’s position as speaker. Matt Gaetz has also served in the state House from 2010 to 2016 and is rumored to be a potential candidate for Florida governor in the upcoming 2026 election.
Don Gaetz wants to clarify that his decision to return to the Florida Senate is independent of his son’s future plans. He acknowledges that Matt Gaetz is focused on tackling budget and spending issues in Washington and advocating for term limits.
As the races for various political offices heat up, it will be interesting to see how both Gaetz senior and Gaetz junior navigate their respective campaigns. Their political presence in Florida could significantly impact the state’s future and policies related to affordability. As Floridians, we should stay informed about their progress and engage in the democratic process by voting for candidates who align with our values and priorities.
