DeSantis starts confronting Trump head-on.
Governor Ron DeSantis Takes a Bold Stand Against Trump
In a surprising move during last week’s debate, Governor Ron DeSantis called out former President Donald Trump by name. This new campaign strategy involves denouncing Trump’s decision to skip the second 2024 Republican presidential debate.
“So please spare me the crocodile tears for these people [in Washington]. They need to change what’s going on. And where’s Joe Biden? He’s completely missing in action from leadership,” DeSantis said. “And you know who else is missing in action? Donald Trump is missing in action. He should be on this stage tonight.”
“He owes it to you,” the Florida governor added to applause from the crowd, “to defend his record, where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt. That set the stage for the inflation that we have.”
This marks a sharp contrast from DeSantis’s previous strategy, where he rarely mentioned Trump by name while making his case for the White House. However, his campaign team has now cranked up the heat on Trump, highlighting several additional swipes he’s made at the GOP front-runner.
During the California GOP convention, DeSantis indirectly hit Trump by pointing out that his leadership turned formerly red states blue.
“I understand that one of my residents was here earlier saying that he turned Florida red,” DeSantis said. “All I will say is that Ronald Reagan made the point there’s no limit to what you can do when you don’t care who gets the credit. I just wished if he was the one that turned Florida red that he wouldn’t have turned Georgia and Arizona blue because that’s not been good for us at all.”
By directly taking on Trump, DeSantis hopes to win over voters and gain momentum. However, he faces an uphill battle as recent polls show him trailing far behind Trump.
University of Central Florida professor James Clark believes attacking Trump is the one card DeSantis has yet to play. “Capturing Trump supporters means taking on Trump,” Clark said. “With Trump trapped in a courtroom, it may be the best, last chance for DeSantis to make a move.”
While some doubt DeSantis’s ability to catch up to Trump, political strategist John Thomas warns that avoiding a direct confrontation with Trump is a perilous mistake. The challenge for DeSantis and other GOP hopefuls is to convince Trump supporters to switch their allegiance without alienating them.
Despite the skepticism, Florida Atlantic University professor Kevin Wagner remains optimistic about DeSantis’s chances. He believes there is still plenty of time for momentum to shift and the political landscape to change before the voting season begins.
Only time will tell if DeSantis’s bold stand against Trump will pay off and reshape the race for the presidency.

How might DeSantis’s attempt to distance himself from Trump impact his campaign and the support he receives from both within and outside the Republican Party
Fted a new narrative that seeks to distance DeSantis from Trump and position him as a bold and independent leader.
DeSantis’s decision to directly call out Trump during the debate has ignited a heated discussion within the Republican Party. While some see it as a courageous move that shows DeSantis’s willingness to stand up to Trump, others view it as a risky strategy that could alienate a significant portion of the GOP base, which remains loyal to the former president.
By denouncing Trump’s absence from the debate stage, DeSantis is highlighting a perceived lack of leadership and accountability on the part of both Trump and President Joe Biden. He argues that the current state of affairs, particularly the rising inflation and growing national debt, demands strong and active leadership from all individuals vying for the presidency.
DeSantis’s statement also emphasizes the need for Trump to defend his record, especially in relation to the drastic increase in national debt during his presidency. By holding Trump accountable for this economic issue, DeSantis aims to position himself as a candidate who prioritizes fiscal responsibility and economic stability.
This shift in strategy reflects DeSantis’s attempt to carve out his own path and differentiate himself from Trump. While Trump remains a prominent figure within the Republican Party, DeSantis wants to establish himself as a leader who can address the nation’s challenges with a fresh perspective and bold decision-making.
A similar move was made by DeSantis’s predecessor, former Governor Jeb Bush, who took a stand against Trump during the 2016 presidential race. Although Bush’s opposition to Trump ultimately did not benefit his own campaign, DeSantis might be hoping for a different outcome this time around.
However, it remains to be seen how this bold stand against Trump will play out for DeSantis in the long run. Trump continues to command a significant following and maintains a strong influence within the Republican Party. Any attempt to distance oneself from Trump could potentially lead to backlash and loss of support.
Nevertheless, DeSantis’s decision to confront Trump head-on demonstrates his willingness to take risks and challenge conventional wisdom in order to shape his own political identity. Only time will tell if this strategy pays off and helps him gain traction in his bid for the presidency. In the ever-changing landscape of American politics, bold moves like these can make or break a candidate’s chances of success.
