Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry, who is stepping up to replace McCarthy for the time being, wasted no time making his presence felt on Capitol Hill.
On Tuesday, he boldly ordered former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to vacate her Capitol hideaway office immediately, sparking condemnation from Pelosi herself, who called it a “sharp departure from tradition.”
According to Politico, an email was sent to Pelosi’s office on Tuesday informing her that the room would be re-keyed and reassigned for “speaker use.”
Furthermore, a spokesperson for Democrat Representative Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) revealed to the New York Post that Hoyer was also asked to vacate his Capitol hideaway office on Wednesday.
This move came shortly after Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted in a historic 216-210 vote on Tuesday.
“With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol,” Pelosi said in a statement, referring to McHenry.
Pelosi has served two separate tenures as Speaker of the House, first from 2007 to 2011, and then from 2019 to 2023.
The former Speaker also mentioned that she is currently in California mourning the death of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), and is unable to retrieve her belongings from the office.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-N.Y.) staff was reportedly seen cleaning out Pelosi’s office on Tuesday.
“Office space doesn’t matter to me, but it seems to be important to them,” Pelosi said. “Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get to work on what’s truly important for the American people.”
According to experts, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) is the early favorite to replace McCarthy.

How has Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry made his presence felt on Capitol Hill?
Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry has wasted no time in making his presence felt on Capitol Hill. Just one day after taking over from Kevin McCarthy, McHenry boldly ordered former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to vacate her Capitol hideaway office immediately. This move has sparked condemnation from Pelosi herself, who called it a “sharp departure from tradition.”
According to Politico, an email was sent to Pelosi’s office on Tuesday informing her that the room would be re-keyed and reassigned for “speaker use.” Additionally, Democrat Representative Steny Hoyer was also asked to vacate his Capitol hideaway office on Wednesday.
This action comes shortly after McCarthy’s ousting in a historic vote on Tuesday. Pelosi expressed her disappointment, stating, ”With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol.”
Pelosi has served two separate tenures as Speaker of the House, first from 2007 to 2011 and then from 2019 to 2023. She also mentioned that she is currently in California mourning the death of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein and is unable to retrieve her belongings from the office.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff was reportedly seen cleaning out Pelosi’s office on Tuesday. This swift action by McHenry is indicative of the changes happening within the House of Representatives and sets the tone for his tenure as interim House Speaker.
It remains to be seen how this move will impact the dynamics of the House and the relationship between the two parties. Nevertheless, it is evident that McHenry intends to assert his authority and make his mark during his time in office. As we wait for the new Republican Leadership to address crucial issues, the leadership shuffle continues to capture attention and shape the future of the House of Representatives.
