Delta, American, United, and Southwest Airlines have made a shocking discovery - unapproved jet engine parts with fake safety certificates have been installed inside their planes.
The airline companies and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency have accused AOG Technics, a leading global aircraft support provider, of selling them these counterfeit parts. According to the airlines, AOG Technics fabricated the necessary airworthiness documents and produced fake safety certificates to sell their engine parts.
These fraudulent parts have been found in 126 engines across the airlines, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of safety oversight measures in the aviation industry.
The affected parts range from minor screws and bolts to crucial turbine blades in the planes. The CFM56 engine model has been particularly impacted, with over 33,900 engines sold to airlines.
Delta Airlines is the latest company to discover these unapproved jet engine parts, joining the other three major airlines. On Monday, Delta announced that it had removed several engines from service, following the lead of the other airlines.
Delta released a statement addressing the issue.
“Delta has been informed by one of our engine service providers that a small number of engines they overhauled for us contain certain parts that do not meet the documentation requirements. Working with the overhaul provider, we are in the process of replacing those parts and remain in compliance with all FAA guidelines – because safety is always our priority.”
Dean Ramnath Chellappa, an Emory University Associate, expressed his concerns about the airline issue.
“For sure, the airlines need to be worried about this because, essentially, this is somebody falsifying their manifest of parts,” Chellappa said. “And it’s a problem that is essentially reflective of how the supply chain is not maintaining the integrity.”
However, Chellappa also emphasized the importance of proper documentation in ensuring the functionality of the parts.
“When a supplying firm, in the supplying chain, certifies that these meet all the standards, etc. Those have to be guaranteed, and you should be able to take that at face value,” he said.
In the case of Delta, the affected engines make up less than 1% of the company’s mainline fleet, providing some relief for frequent fliers.
United Airlines also addressed the issue, stating that only a few of their planes were impacted by the unapproved parts.
“As we investigated this matter, we learned that compressor stator vane seals from this supplier had been installed on a single engine on each of two aircraft, including one that was already undergoing routine maintenance. We are replacing the affected engines on both aircraft before they are returned to service, and we’ll continue to investigate as new information becomes available from our suppliers,” United said in a statement.
Southwest Airlines provided a statement on Tuesday evening.
“We became aware of the issue in early August and took necessary steps to ensure we do not have any parts in our fleet from AOG. Our suppliers conducted a review of Southwest parts and identified one engine that contained two low-pressure turbine blades from this vendor. In an abundance of caution, we made an immediate decision in August to promptly replace those parts on that single engine.”
The airline parts were supposed to undergo rigorous safety tests to ensure their airworthiness. However, the Federal Aviation Administration and European investigators have accused AOG Technics of forging safety certifications and documentation.
As investigations into these potentially dangerous faults continue, the major airlines have taken their jets out of service. They have also reassured passengers that their safety has not been compromised.

Parts.
There are several different parts that make up a whole. Some examples of parts include:
1. Mechanical parts: These can include pieces like screws, bolts, gears, and springs. They are often used in machines or appliances to help them function correctly.
2. Electronic parts: These parts can include items like resistors, capacitors, transistors, and integrated circuits. They are used to build electronic devices and circuits.
3. Body parts: When referring to living organisms, body parts are the various components that make up the physical structure. This can include organs, limbs, muscles, bones, and other tissues.
4. Automotive parts: These are the components used in the construction and repair of vehicles, such as engines, tires, brakes, and suspension systems.
5. Computer parts: Computers are made up of numerous parts, including the central processing unit (CPU), memory modules, hard drives, motherboards, and power supplies.
6. Home appliance parts: These are the components found in household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers. Examples include motors, pumps, valves, and electrical controls.
7. Building materials: When constructing a building, various parts are utilized, such as bricks, concrete, steel beams, windows, and doors.
8. Furniture parts: These are the components used in the construction of furniture pieces, such as wooden frames, cushions, fabrics, and fasteners.
9. Plumbing parts: To build and maintain a plumbing system, various parts like pipes, fittings, valves, faucets, and drains are required.
10. Art and craft supplies: Artists and crafters use a variety of parts for their creations, including paint brushes, needles, yarn, beads, and ribbons.
These are just a few examples of the many different types of parts that exist. Each one plays a vital role in its respective context and contributes to the overall functionality or aesthetic of the whole.
