New York Toddler’s Tragic Death Exposes Shocking Narcotics Operation at Day Care Center
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Nicholas Dominici’s father, Otoniel Feliz, tearfully revealed that instead of a cherished photo of his son’s future kindergarten graduation, he now holds a haunting image of his son’s lifeless body. The 22-month-old toddler tragically lost his life due to exposure to fentanyl at the Divino Niño day care center in the Bronx.
Joined by Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and other officials, Mr. Feliz stood as they announced the indictments of the day care center’s operator, Grei Mendez, her husband Felix Herrera Garcia, and Garcia’s cousin Carlisto Brito. The charges include murder and manslaughter in connection with Dominici’s death.

Ms. Mendez, Mr. Brito, and Mr. Herrera Garcia were arraigned and ordered to be held without bail. Ms. Mendez and Mr. Brito were arrested after Dominici and three other children under Ms. Mendez’s care showed signs of opioid exposure. Herrera Garcia, who had fled to Mexico, was apprehended and extradited back to New York.
Tragically, Dominici was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other three children, aged 8 months to 2 years old, received treatment for fentanyl exposure. Shockingly, investigators discovered a kilogram of fentanyl hidden in a closet at the day care center, and an additional 6 kilograms of fentanyl, heroin, and other controlled substances concealed beneath a trap door beneath a padded mat where the children napped.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark expressed her outrage, stating, “This is a catastrophe. Our sorrow is matched only by the outrage because these babies were used as shields to protect a narcotics operation.” She emphasized the responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of all children.
Andres Aranda, Ms. Mendez’s attorney, vehemently denied any knowledge of a fentanyl operation, proclaiming her innocence. Attorneys for Mr. Brito and Mr. Herrera Garcia were unavailable for comment.
In addition to the state charges, the defendants and a fourth individual also face federal narcotics charges.
Mr. Feliz, grieving the loss of his son, alternated between Spanish and English as he expressed his betrayal by the day care center. He recounted how Ms. Mendez had gained their trust by regularly sending photos and text messages throughout the day. “We trusted them because we saw it was a place that would keep us informed,” he lamented.
While grateful for the efforts of those involved in the case, Mr. Feliz acknowledged that nothing could bring his son back.

The shocking discovery of a narcotics operation at a day care center in New York City has left the community and authorities in disbelief. The tragedy that claimed young Nicholas Dominici’s life has exposed the dark underbelly of drug distribution and usage in unsuspecting places, necessitating a thorough investigation and a reevaluation of safety measures in child care facilities.
The Divino Niño day care center, located in the Bronx, was intended to be a safe haven for children, a place of learning, laughter, and growth. Instead, it harbored a sinister secret that went undetected for far too long. It was operating as a front for a narcotics operation, exploiting the trust of parents and endangering the lives of innocent children.
The indictment of the day care center’s operator, Grei Mendez, and her accomplices Felix Herrera Garcia and Carlisto Brito on charges of murder and manslaughter highlights the severity of the situation. These individuals allegedly played a direct role in the events leading to Nicholas Dominici’s untimely death. It is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from the illicit drug trade.
The tragic loss of Nicholas Dominici has reignited the conversation around drug addiction, abuse, and prevention. Fentanyl, the drug responsible for his death, is an extremely potent synthetic opioid that poses a significant threat to public health. Its growing prevalence and devastating impact highlight the need for stricter regulation, greater education, and enhanced support for those battling addiction.
While the focus of this case is on the criminal charges surrounding the day care center, it is crucial to address the systemic issues that allowed such a facility to operate unnoticed. The tragedy raises important questions about the effectiveness of regulatory systems and oversight in the child care industry. How was the day care center able to fly under the radar? What measures can be implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future?
Authorities and regulators must take immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of children enrolled in day care centers across the country. This includes implementing stricter background checks, more frequent inspections, and improved training for staff members. Additionally, parents and guardians should be encouraged to actively participate in the vetting process and report any suspicious activities or concerns.
The heart-wrenching loss of Nicholas Dominici serves as a reminder that the war on drugs is far from over. It highlights the need for continued efforts to combat the production, distribution, and abuse of narcotics. Alongside law enforcement, society as a whole must work together to address the underlying issues that contribute to drug-related tragedies, such as addiction, mental health, and the availability of illicit substances.
As we mourn the loss of an innocent child, let us strive to create a safer world for future generations. May Nicholas Dominici’s tragic death not be in vain, but instead serve as a catalyst for change and a reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from the dangers that lurk in unexpected places.
