Warning about Robert Malley, our concerns were ignored.
Washington Press Corps Finally Catches Up to Adam Kredo’s Reporting on Robert Malley
It seems that part of the Washington press corps has finally caught up with our own Adam Kredo’s reporting on President Biden’s envoy to Iran, Robert Malley. Malley is now under FBI investigation for mishandling classified information.
Now that the scandal is out in the open, let’s take a moment to revisit some of Kredo’s insightful scoops. Before Malley was officially announced as the Biden administration’s point person to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, Kredo sensed something was amiss. On January 25, 2021, he reported that a senior adviser to Iran’s then-president, Hassan Rouhani, expressed approval of Malley’s selection.
A few weeks later, Kredo uncovered the peculiar discussions Malley had with Chinese Communist Party officials regarding restarting nuclear diplomacy with Iran. This contradicted Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s promise to pause diplomacy until Iran ceased stockpiling highly enriched uranium, which can be used for weapons.
When Malley skipped briefings to Congress on the Iran deal, Kredo wrote about the first House investigation into the revocation of the envoy’s security clearance. Kredo was once again on the case when the Iranian regime’s mouthpiece, the Tehran Times, published a letter from the State Department’s diplomatic security office informing Malley of his suspended security clearance.
Unfortunately, Kredo’s scoops were largely ignored by the media and the Biden administration. However, the overwhelming evidence can no longer be ignored. After Semafor and Iran International recently published revelations about an Iranian foreign ministry initiative to influence Western experts in shaping Iran policy, mainstream outlets are finally connecting the dots.
It turns out that Malley hired Ariane Tabatabai, an adviser involved in this Iranian operation, to assist in reviving the nuclear deal. The Pentagon later appointed her as the chief of staff to the assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low intensity conflict. Malley also attempted to hire Ali Vaez, another member of the Iranian influence network, but Vaez failed to obtain the necessary clearances for the position.
Once again, Kredo was ahead of the curve. On March 16, 2021, he raised concerns about Tabatabai when Malley hired her. Through careful analysis of her public writings, statements, and interviews with Iranian dissidents, Kredo revealed that Malley’s new adviser had downplayed Iranian protests and defended Iran’s interference in Iraq.
One would expect the State Department to appreciate Kredo’s investigative work. Instead, a spokesperson from Foggy Bottom accused Kredo of tarnishing the reputation of a highly qualified analyst.
If only the Biden administration had heeded Kredo’s warnings, they could have avoided the current scandal and embarrassment of entrusting their Iran policy to someone who fails to recognize that Iran’s regime is not a friend, but an enemy. If only the Biden administration had listened, the Pentagon could have avoided the potential infiltration of an Iranian agent into its ranks.
There is a lesson to be learned here.
What concerns did Adam Kredo raise about Ariane Tabatabai when she was hired by Robert Malley, and why did the State Department not appreciate his investigative work
