U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urges China’s president, Xi Jinping, to stand with Israel in the aftermath of the devastating Hamas attacks.
Schumer expresses his disappointment with Beijing’s lack of sympathy towards Israel during the recent events.
The Chinese media coverage of the meeting focuses on the importance of cooperation and mutual respect, while Xi’s comments hint at a potential summit with President Joe Biden next month.
Over the weekend, Hamas terrorists launched deadly attacks in Israel, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Israelis and the kidnapping of many more.
In response, China’s foreign ministry issued a brief statement calling for peace and an end to hostilities to protect civilians. They also emphasized the need for a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent state of Palestine.
During his trip to Asia, Schumer is leading a bipartisan congressional delegation, which includes stops in South Korea and Japan, to further the nation’s economic and security objectives.
“The ongoing events in Israel over the last few days are nothing short of horrific. I urge you and the Chinese people to stand with the Israeli people and condemn the cowardly and vicious attacks,” Schumer tells Xi during their Beijing meeting.
“I say this with respect, but I was disappointed by the foreign minister’s statement that showed no sympathy or support for the Israeli people during these troubled times,” he adds.
At a press briefing, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, expresses deep concern about the escalation and condemns acts against civilians.
“We are very saddened by the civilian casualties caused by the conflict, and also oppose and condemn such acts against civilians,” she says.
Schumer and Democrat committee leaders previously announced plans to draft legislation aimed at restricting technology flow to China, preventing conflict with Taiwan, and tightening regulations on American capital going to Chinese companies.
Efforts to increase competition with China in the field of semiconductors and other technologies were also made through a bill passed last year.
While emphasizing that Washington, D.C. does not seek conflict with Beijing, Schumer reaffirms the trip’s main goals of economic reciprocity and creating a level playing field for American enterprises in China.
“Competition and confrontation are not in line with the trend of the times, let alone solving their own problems and the challenges facing the world,” Schumer tells Xi, according to CCTV.
“China has always believed that the common interests of China and the U.S. far outweigh their differences,” he adds, according to CCTV.
U.S. officials claim that communication between U.S. and Chinese officials in recent months has improved strained relations over issues such as Taiwan, the origins of COVID-19, and Chinese espionage.
