His common-sense, warm-hearted rhetoric resonated with me, and I eagerly absorbed his lectures on YouTube.
However, a few years later, I was shocked to learn that my newfound hero had fallen ill with sarcoma and eventually passed away. But that was just the beginning of the shocking revelations.
When allegations of sexual exploitation emerged, I was initially skeptical. I had witnessed dubious claims tarnish the reputation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and saw similar accusations in Hollywood during the #MeToo movement. I couldn’t believe that someone who dedicated his life to promoting God’s goodness could be guilty of such actions.
But as time went on, it became clear that the allegations had merit. Zacharias’s own ministry confirmed the claims, stating that they believed the women who came forward and were devastated by the abuse that had taken place.
The truth shook me to my core, but perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Looking back, there were red flags that the Christian community should have been aware of. Two of the most troubling were Zacharias’s ecumenism and lack of church involvement.
Ecumenism
One major red flag was Zacharias’s ecumenism. While promoting unity between different Protestant denominations is one thing, promoting unity between explicitly non-Christian churches and the Christian church is another. The more ecumenical one becomes, the more universalist one becomes, denying the truth of Jesus Christ.
Zacharias’s visit to a Mormon temple and his ecumenical comments to Mormons raised concerns. The Mormon church promotes false teachings that contradict biblical Christianity. While speaking and evangelizing to followers of false teachings is important, actively building bridges between false doctrines and the Gospel is problematic.
Church Attendance
Another troubling sign was Zacharias’s lack of church involvement. He had little to no church attendance and was always on the road. This lack of commitment to a local church and accountability is a red flag. Christians are called to nurture and grow the church, and regular church attendance is an important aspect of that.
Accountability is crucial for living a life of integrity, and it’s difficult to maintain without regular exposure to other faithful Christians.
John Piper and What the Bible Has to Say
Reflecting on Zacharias’s downfall, pastor and theologian John Piper highlighted three examples of gospel ministers in scripture who spoke the truth but made a shipwreck of their lives. These examples serve as warnings:
- Soul-saving, Christ-exalting truth may be spoken by hypocrites.
- Forsaking a good conscience is a prelude to moral disaster.
- The pursuit of money and lavish lifestyles in ministry are signs of love for this age.
The Bible makes it clear that even teachers of the true Gospel can fall into sin. Christians should put their full faith in Christ alone.
Don’t Weep For Zacharias, Or Fear His Fate
Pastor Webbon reminds us that those in hell are people who had no faith or repentance. If Zacharias repented of his sins, we can rejoice knowing he is in heaven. If not, there is no need to despair or fear the same fate. God’s justice is perfect, and salvation comes through faith in Christ alone.
As Christians, we must learn from the red flags of Ravi Zacharias and place our ultimate trust in Jesus Christ.

As Christians, we must strive for discernment and be willing to question the teachings and actions of those in leadership positions. We cannot blindly follow charismatic figures without critically examining their beliefs and lifestyle. The Bible urges us to test everything and hold on to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Furthermore, this serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within the church. Leaders should be held to a high standard of moral conduct and should be willing to be held accountable for their actions. The church community should provide a safe space for victims to come forward and express their pain, while also seeking justice and restoration.

It is a reminder that we should not place our faith solely in human leaders, but in the unchanging truth of the Gospel. It is a call for discernment, accountability, and a commitment to the teachings of Scripture. Let us learn from this tragedy and strive for a stronger, more faithful expression of Christianity.
