House Republicans query Blinken on Biden’s halted Iran envoy.
House Republicans Question Secretary of State Antony Blinken Over Former Biden Official Linked to Iranian Spy Ring
House Republicans are raising concerns about Secretary of State Antony Blinken regarding a former Biden official who has been accused of mishandling classified documents and being connected to an alleged “Iranian spy ring.”
House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) have sent a letter to Blinken, requesting State Department communications involving Robert Malley, who previously served as special envoy to Iran, as well as information about his security clearance. Malley is currently under FBI investigation for his handling of classified documents and has been accused of having ties to an ”Iranian spy ring” that aims to influence U.S. policy in favor of Iran.
“The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the Biden Administration’s efforts to conceal details about its ongoing secret nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran from Congress, ignoring statutory obligations for congressional oversight,” wrote Comer and Grothman. “The Administration’s lack of transparency is even more troubling in light of press reports about Iran’s direct role in this weekend’s horrific attack on Israel by Hamas and additional revelations that former Special Envoy for Iran (SEI), Robert Malley, and members of his negotiating team may have had compromising ties to the Iranian regime.”
Malley is facing allegations that he facilitated the activities of several individuals involved in an alleged Iranian spy ring, including assisting an alleged Iranian asset named Ariane Tabatabai in infiltrating the State Department and Pentagon.
“The ongoing investigation into Mr. Malley’s security violations is so serious that he was suspended from his position without pay. Furthermore, the investigation was initially concealed from Congress, the American people, and even his fellow State Department officials,” stated the letter to Blinken.
The lawmakers are requesting State Department communications and documents to determine whether officials were aware of “Malley’s relationships with Iranian regime officials and senior members of Iran’s proxy groups” during the review of his security clearance for the special envoy position.

They are also seeking documentation on government discussions regarding Malley and his access to classified information, as well as a list of individuals present during discussions about Iran’s holding of American hostages. Last month, the Biden administration approved a deal to release five Iranian prisoners and $6 billion in frozen assets in exchange for five Americans held captive in Iran.
This decision has faced increasing scrutiny following a surprise attack by Hamas terrorists, reportedly supported by Iran, against Israel last week.
How are the allegations against Robert Malley related to congressional oversight?
Ongressional oversight,” the letter from Comer and Grothman reads. “Given the serious nature of these allegations, it is imperative that the State Department be fully transparent and provide all relevant documents and information pertaining to Mr. Malley’s role and security clearance.”
The Republicans’ concerns stem from a recent report by Politico, which detailed allegations of Malley’s mishandling of classified documents and his connections to an Iranian spy ring. According to the report, Malley had been in regular contact with an Iranian diplomat who is a known intelligence officer, raising questions about the extent of his involvement with the alleged spy ring. The report also alleged that Malley’s activities were part of a larger effort to undermine U.S. policy towards Iran and advance Iran’s interests.
In their letter to Blinken, the House Republicans request all communications between the State Department and Malley, including emails, memos, and any other relevant documents. They also seek information about Malley’s security clearance and any actions taken by the State Department in response to the allegations against him.
These allegations against Malley have raised serious concerns among the Republicans, who believe that they could have significant implications for U.S. national security. They argue that if Malley did indeed mishandle classified documents and have connections to an Iranian spy ring, it would be a grave breach of trust and a threat to U.S. interests.
The Republicans also criticize the Biden administration for what they perceive as a lack of transparency and accountability in this matter. They accuse the administration of trying to conceal information about its secret negotiations with Iran and failing to uphold its obligations for congressional oversight. The letter from Comer and Grothman calls for full transparency from the State Department and urges the department to cooperate fully with the House Oversight and Accountability Committee’s investigation.
It is unclear how the Biden administration will respond to these allegations and the Republicans’ request for information. Secretary Blinken has yet to address the matter publicly. However, the House Republicans are determined to continue their investigation and to hold the administration accountable for any potential wrongdoing.
Overall, the allegations against former Biden official Robert Malley and his alleged connections to an Iranian spy ring are serious and raise concerns about U.S. national security. The request for information by House Republicans underscores the need for transparency and accountability in this matter. The investigation and response to these allegations will undoubtedly have significant implications for U.S. relations with Iran and the broader Middle East region.
