Scalise lacks votes for Speaker, Trump’s favored candidate set to rejoin race.
Scalise Falls Short of Votes for Speaker, Trump-Backed Jordan May Take Victory
House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana is vying for the position of House Speaker, but he is expected to fall short of the 217 votes needed to win. According to one Republican leader, Scalise will be at least 20 votes shy, leaving an opportunity for Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who has the backing of former President Trump, to potentially secure the victory.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has stated that at least 20 Republicans will not be voting for Scalise. Reasons cited include political differences and concerns about Scalise’s health, as he has been battling cancer.

Scalise defeated Jordan 113-99 votes during the House Republican Conference’s nomination for speaker on Wednesday.
However, Jordan has not publicly expressed any desire for the position. In fact, since the Wednesday vote, he has encouraged Republicans to vote for Scalise as a gesture of unity.
“I think it’s important we come together, and I’ve offered to nominate Steve on the House floor,” Jordan said.
Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who has been a surprise supporter of Scalise, also expressed his excitement for Scalise’s potential victory. Gaetz, who has been referred to as “McCarthy 2.0,” told reporters that he can’t wait to vote for Scalise.
Q: What’s your reaction now that Scalise has the votes for Speaker elect?

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced her support for Jordan, stating that she believes Scalise should focus on his battle with cancer rather than pursuing the speakership.
I’m supporting Jim Jordan for Speaker. I’m not supporting Scalise. I like Steve Scalise, and as I said, I want him to beat cancer, and he should be focused on that.

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has also announced his support for Jordan, according to Fox News.
Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Jordan for speaker, expressing concerns about Scalise’s ability to fulfill the role due to his cancer diagnosis in an interview with CNN.
In order for Scalise to secure the speakership, those who voted for Jordan on Wednesday, as well as the majority of the nine Republicans who did not vote, would need to switch their support to Scalise. However, this outcome seems unlikely.
