Suzanne Somers, Beloved Actress and Businesswoman, Passes Away at 76
LOS ANGELES—The entertainment industry mourns the loss of Suzanne Somers, the iconic actress who captured hearts as Chrissy Snow on ABC’s hit sitcom “Three’s Company.” Somers, who later found success as a businesswoman and author, passed away on October 15th after a courageous battle with breast cancer, just one day before her 77th birthday.
“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Oct. 15th,” her publicist R. Couri Hay said in a statement. “She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family. Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
The news of Somers’ passing was reported by the celebrity news site Page Six, stating that she died in Palm Springs.
Before her breakthrough role on “Three’s Company,” Somers had smaller parts in various films and TV shows. However, it was her portrayal of Chrissy Snow that catapulted her to stardom in 1977.
Starring alongside John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt, Somers played one of two single women sharing an apartment with Ritter’s character. The show quickly became a massive hit.
Unfortunately, Somers left the show during its fifth season due to a contract dispute, but she continued to make her mark in the late 1980s with the sitcom “She’s The Sheriff,” which ran for two seasons.
In the 1990s, Somers gained renewed fame as the face of the Thighmaster, appearing in a series of popular commercials for the exercise equipment.
In 1977, Somers married Canadian producer and television host Alan Hamal, marking her second marriage. Hamal, now 87, stood by her side throughout her battle with breast cancer.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, Somers openly shared her journey with her fans. In July of this year, she took to Instagram to announce that her cancer had returned.
“As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down,” she wrote. ”I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear, and I’m a fighter.”
