United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen confidently stated on Monday that the U.S. has the financial capability to support both the Israel and Ukraine wars.
During an interview with Britain’s Sky News, Yellen confidently affirmed that the U.S. can “absolutely” afford to fund both ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Europe.
“America can certainly afford to stand with Israel and to support Israel’s military needs, and we also can and must support Ukraine in its struggle against Russia. The American economy is doing extremely well.” Yellen said in an interview with Sky News.
Meanwhile, the Biden Administration is urging Congress to pass an emergency aid package that would deliver support to both Ukraine and Israel.
Additionally, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan stated during an interview on CBS‘ “Face the Nation” that President Joe Biden plans to discuss the need for an aid package with lawmakers for both nations.
“The president has made it clear that he will present Congress with a funding package for Ukraine as well as continued support for Israel,” Sullivan said. He noted that the cost of the aid package will be “significantly higher” than $2 billion.
However, with a vacant House Speaker, the House is currently unable to pass any legislation, including a bill to assist Israel in their conflict with Hamas.
Yellen emphasized the urgency of releasing funds immediately and urged Republicans to elect a new Speaker.
“America stands firmly behind Israel, period,” Yellen stated. “America has also made it clear to Israel that we are working closely with them and that they have the right to defend themselves. However, it is important to minimize civilian casualties as much as possible.”
Israel is preparing for a ground invasion of Gaza after conducting continuous airstrikes. Over 1,400 Israelis have been killed in Hamas terrorist attacks, while Palestinian authorities report at least 2,670 deaths in Gaza.
Biden is scheduled to visit Israel on Wednesday to meet with top officials and discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict.
