Arizona GOP Rep. Debbie Lesko won’t run for reelection due to a broken DC.
Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) to Step Down from Congress, Citing Family Priorities and Congressional Gridlock
After three terms in the House, Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) has announced that she will not seek reelection next year. In a heartfelt statement, Lesko expressed her desire to spend more time with her family and highlighted the frustrating inability of Congress to accomplish meaningful work.
Lesko’s decision comes on the heels of House Republicans’ failure to elect Republican speaker nominee Jim Jordan (R-OH), which has further hindered progress in the lower chamber. The timing of her departure underscores the challenges faced by lawmakers in Washington, D.C.
“Spending, on average, three weeks out of every month away from my family, and traveling back and forth to Washington, D.C., almost every weekend is difficult,”
Lesko said.
“Right now, Washington, D.C., is broken; it is hard to get anything done.”
The House is set to reconvene on Wednesday for the next round of votes for speaker of the House. Jordan fell short of the 217 votes needed for the position, securing only 200 votes in the initial vote.
Lesko entered the House in 2018 through a special election following the resignation of former Republican Rep. Trent Franks. Franks stepped down amidst allegations of making his female staffers uncomfortable and health issues affecting his wife.
Representing Arizona’s 8th District, which encompasses parts of Maricopa County and various suburban neighborhoods north of Phoenix, Lesko was reelected in November with an overwhelming 96.5% of the vote, facing no Democratic challenger.
Before her national political career, Lesko served in both chambers of the Arizona state legislature. As of now, she has not disclosed any future plans following her retirement from the House.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Lesko for further comment.
