CA Senator’s group vowed to refund FTX funds, but diverted millions to pro-choice organization.
The Liberal Group’s Controversial Use of Funds
The liberal group formerly led by California senator Laphonza Butler made headlines when it promised to return millions of dollars from disgraced cryptocurrency figure Sam Bankman-Fried. However, instead of fulfilling this pledge, the organization has redirected nearly $1.6 million to support the pro-abortion movement.
One recipient of these funds is Women Vote, the campaign arm of Emily’s List, which received a substantial $2.25 million from former FTX executive Nishad Singh. Singh has confessed to making fraudulent political donations on behalf of Bankman-Fried. Despite the group’s earlier statement about cooperating with federal authorities to return the money, a recent review by the Washington Free Beacon reveals that no refunds or payments have been made.
Interestingly, Women Vote seems to have no shortage of funds. It has already allocated $1.575 million to Emily’s List this year to support female candidates who advocate for abortion rights. According to Federal Election Commission disclosures, Women Vote has received nearly $2.3 million in contributions and currently holds $423,995 in the bank. Additionally, the group has donated $50,000 to America Votes Action Fund, an organization focused on mobilizing liberal voters.
Questions Arise for Butler
The failure of Women Vote to surrender the FTX cash raises questions for Laphonza Butler, who is currently undecided on whether to run for a full-term next year. It remains unclear whether Butler was aware of Singh’s contributions or the discussions surrounding them. Butler, who served as president of Emily’s List until her recent appointment to the Senate, has not provided any comment on the matter.
Bankman-Fried, who is currently on trial in New York, is accused of using stolen money from FTX to make political contributions and boost his personal profile. He donated $40 million to Democratic groups, including $5 million to a political action committee supporting President Joe Biden in 2020. These donations seemingly facilitated Bankman-Fried’s access to Biden White House officials. He even attended a House Democratic retreat after making significant contributions to the caucus’s campaign arm.
Bankman-Fried employed a strategy of making donations to mainstream Democrats in his own name while using other FTX executives as “straw donors” to contribute to Republicans and progressive groups. Singh was specifically chosen to make contributions to left-wing political organizations. Court filings in the Bankman-Fried case reveal that a political adviser instructed Singh to donate to “a lot of woke shit for transactional purposes.”
One of the groups that received Singh’s contributions was the LGBTQ Victory Fund, which received $1.1 million to support House candidate Becca Balint. Shortly after Singh’s donations, Emily’s List endorsed Balint, who eventually won her election and cooperated with federal authorities in the FTX investigation.
Bankman-Fried and Women Vote also shared their support for Rep. Nikki Budzinski, with Bankman-Fried’s Save Our Future PAC spending over $260,000 on ads for Budzinski and Women Vote contributing over $250,000 to boost the Democrat’s campaign.
Emily’s List has not provided any comments on the matter, but a spokeswoman for the organization assured the Washington Post that they are actively cooperating with authorities to reclaim the contributions.
Why did the liberal group prioritize supporting the pro-abortion movement with the redirected funds, and what does this say about their priorities and ethical standards?
The redirected funds or if she had any involvement in the decision-making process. Either way, the controversy surrounding the use of funds by the liberal group casts a shadow over Butler’s leadership and raises doubts about her ability to make ethical and responsible decisions.
The fact that the funds have been used to support the pro-abortion movement also raises concerns about the group’s priorities. While it is important to support causes that align with one’s beliefs, using funds that were promised to be returned to support a controversial issue like abortion raises questions about the group’s ethical standards and financial management.
Furthermore, the failure to cooperate with federal authorities in returning the funds is concerning. If the liberal group truly believed in the importance of returning the money, why have they not fulfilled their pledge? This lack of transparency and accountability raises doubts about the group’s credibility and integrity.
Moreover, the large amount of funds that Women Vote has already received and allocated raises questions about their financial management and decision-making processes. With millions of dollars at their disposal, it is important to ensure that these funds are being used responsibly and in accordance with the group’s mission and values.
The controversy surrounding the use of funds by the liberal group formerly led by Laphonza Butler raises serious questions about the group’s leadership, ethics, and financial management. The failure to return the funds as promised and their redirection to support the pro-abortion movement, along with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermine the credibility and integrity of the organization. As the group’s leader, Butler bears the responsibility for these actions and must provide answers to the questions that have arisen. Only then can the trust in the liberal group be restored, and the focus can shift back to the important issues and causes they claim to champion.
