Pentagon reports US forces targeted by Iraq suicide drones.
U.S. and allied forces in Iraq faced a harrowing attack on October 18th when two suicide drones targeted them. Thankfully, the Pentagon swiftly shot down the drones, preventing any harm.
According to a U.S. defense official, “An attempted attack against U.S. and Coalition forces in Iraq was disrupted in the early morning of Oct. 18. Two one-way drones were shot down in the attack. There were no injuries to any forces during the attempted attack.”
The United States maintains a limited presence in Iraq and has faced attacks from Iran-backed militants multiple times in recent years. In March 2022, missiles directed by Iran came dangerously close to the U.S. Embassy in Erbil.
On October 18th, the Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq was targeted in an attack. This incident coincides with the United States’ efforts to provide security and humanitarian aid to Israel following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7th.

Initially, the Palestinian Authority claimed that the explosion, which claimed hundreds of lives, was caused by an Israeli bombing. Several Western media outlets, including CNN and Politico, echoed this claim in their headlines.
However, open-source intelligence analysts, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Pentagon have gathered geolocated video evidence showing that the explosion resulted from a malfunctioning rocket fired from within Gaza.
The IDF has also released intercepted audio communications from the time of the blast, indicating that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a designated terrorist organization, was responsible for the failed rocket launch.
“An enemy rocket barrage was carried out toward Israel, which passed in the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit,” stated IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari on October 18th.
Despite this evidence, adversaries of Israel and the United States continue to exploit the situation. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian took to social media, warning that time was running out for Israel after the Al-Ahli explosion and promising more fronts in the ongoing Israel–Gaza War.
Russian officials have also demanded further proof from Israel to absolve it of responsibility for the hospital strike.
Israel, however, released drone footage of the explosion site, which clearly shows the absence of an impact crater from a missile or bomb, supporting its claim of innocence.
Nevertheless, there has been significant political fallout for Israel and the United States in the Arab world. Pro-Hamas riots and demonstrations have erupted in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, some of which have resulted in attacks on U.S. and Israeli embassies.
So far, no consulate or embassy has been breached during the unrest.
