Most Americans back a border wall: Poll.
A Majority of Americans Support Building a Border Wall, Poll Shows
A recent poll from Quinnipiac University reveals that over half of American voters, 52 percent to be exact, support the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. This marks the first time since November 2016 that a majority of voters have expressed support for the border wall. The poll, conducted amid the southern border crisis and the influx of illegal immigrants, also found that 44 percent of voters are against the wall.
The results of the poll reflect a clear divide along political party lines. While 91 percent of Republicans are in favor of building the wall, 78 percent of Democrats oppose it. Independents are split, with 51 percent supporting the construction and 46 percent against it.

“Build the Wall,” the rallying cry that was once vilified, has made a comeback. Republican voters have embraced it, and the unresolved border crisis has undoubtedly played a role in its resurgence, according to Tim Malloy, a Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst.
The poll also revealed that 55 percent of voters view the influx of migrants seeking sanctuary in the United States as a crisis, while 31 percent consider it a problem but not a crisis. Only 11 percent do not see it as a problem at all.
When it comes to welcoming migrants seeking sanctuary in their communities, 31 percent of voters are open to it. Another 37 percent would like to welcome them but believe their communities cannot accommodate them. On the other hand, 27 percent are opposed to welcoming migrants into their communities.
The poll, conducted from October 12 to 16, surveyed 1,552 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
Last week, a Fox News poll also showed similar results, with an even higher number of Americans (57 percent) in favor of building a border wall. The poll revealed that 70 percent of voters believe the current level of border security is not strict enough, and the same percentage believes the country’s immigration system has been broken for decades. These latest findings contrast with past polls where the majority of Americans opposed the construction of a border wall. A Pew Research Poll in January 2019 found that 58 percent of Americans were against building a border wall, while a Gallup poll in February 2019 showed that 60 percent of Americans were against it.Border Wall Construction Resumed
The release of these poll results coincides with the Biden administration’s decision to resume the construction of the border wall, a move that has sparked controversy and backlash from both Republicans and Democrats. This decision represents a significant policy reversal from the administration’s previous stance on the issue.
In early October, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas waived dozens of federal regulations to expedite the construction of roads and barriers along the southern border in Texas. The new barriers will be built in areas with high illegal entry rates, such as the Rio Grande Valley Sector and various tracts within the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Secretary Mayorkas issued the waiver after U.S. Border Patrol figures revealed that over 245,000 migrants had illegally crossed the border in Starr County since early August.DHS plans to fund the construction project using appropriations allocated by Congress during the Trump administration in 2019.
Since taking office, President Biden halted ongoing construction on the border wall, which has resulted in unused materials lying along the border and estimated costs of at least $72 million.

What role does the unresolved border crisis play in shaping public support for building a wall?
Osed the construction of a border wall. The shift in public opinion can be attributed to various factors, including the ongoing border crisis and concerns about national security.
The poll conducted by Quinnipiac University clearly demonstrates the partisan divide on this issue. Republicans overwhelmingly support the construction of a wall, with 91 percent in favor. On the other hand, 78 percent of Democrats oppose it. Independents are split, with 51 percent supporting the construction and 46 percent against it. This polarization reflects the broader political landscape in the country.
The resurgence of the rallying cry “Build the Wall” among Republican voters is notable. This slogan, once vilified by some quarters, has gained traction once again. The unresolved border crisis has likely played a significant role in this resurgence. The influx of undocumented immigrants and the strain it has placed on border security have heightened concerns among a substantial portion of the American public.
The poll also shed light on how voters perceive the influx of migrants seeking sanctuary in the United States. A majority of 55 percent consider it a crisis, while 31 percent view it as a problem but not a crisis. Only 11 percent do not see it as a problem at all. Whether this perception is driven by media coverage or personal experiences, it reflects the widespread acknowledgment that this issue requires attention and action.
When it comes to welcoming migrants seeking sanctuary into their communities, opinions are more nuanced. While 31 percent of voters are open to it, another 37 percent express a desire to welcome them but believe their communities cannot accommodate them. Conversely, 27 percent are opposed to welcoming migrants into their communities. These differing viewpoints highlight the intricate nature of the immigration debate in America.
It is important to note that this poll is not an isolated finding. A recent Fox News poll also revealed widespread support for the construction of a border wall, with 57 percent of Americans in favor. Additionally, 70 percent of voters believe that the current level of border security is insufficient, and the same percentage sees the country’s immigration system as broken.
These latest poll results contrast with past polls where the majority of Americans opposed the construction of a border wall. The change in public sentiment can be attributed to the current state of the southern border and the resulting concerns about national security and immigration. As the Biden administration grapples with these challenges, it will need to consider the public’s opinion on this issue.
