According to White House officials, this ⁣investment, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, represents the most significant direct funding for essential grid⁤ infrastructure in⁢ the history of the⁣ United States.

By⁢ funding 58 different projects across 44 states, this investment will bring⁣ 35 gigawatts of renewable energy online, contributing ‍to the overall goal of increasing the use ‍of renewable energy sources.

Furthermore, the ⁤funds will support the development of interregional transmission, ‌enabling the export of available capacities to other regions during shortages, thus strengthening grid dependability.

The administration also claims ⁢that this funding will facilitate‍ the implementation of more renewable energy projects and enhance the resilience of Western states against wildfires.

This investment comes ‍at a ⁢critical time when millions of people are at risk⁣ of rolling ‌blackouts or prolonged outages due to severe weather conditions.

During‍ a preview event on Wednesday, ⁢White House Infrastructure Implementation Coordinator ⁤Mitch Landrieu emphasized the importance of investing‌ in‌ the U.S. power grid, highlighting its ‌vulnerability to the impacts of the climate‍ crisis.

“Our outdated grid is especially vulnerable to the⁤ increasing impacts of the climate crisis,” Landrieu said. “Older equipment ⁢can‌ overload during extreme ⁣heat and cold when power is needed most. And it’s more likely to fail when communities are⁢ washed out by historic floods and decimated by‍ stronger storms.”

According to White House officials, the funds are managed⁣ by the DOE’s system Resilience and Innovation Partnerships,⁤ or “GRIP” program, which aims⁤ to upgrade the American electricity system and mitigate the⁤ consequences of extreme weather events and natural disasters.

In alignment with the administration’s clean energy and ⁤carbon reduction goals, the program seeks to expand the use of renewable ⁢energy sources and enhance grid dependability through innovative methods of⁢ transmission, storage, and distribution of power.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm stated ⁤that this involves incorporating additional renewable projects that the administration supports.

“The grid,⁢ as it currently‍ sits, is not equipped to handle all the new demand,” she told reporters.
