Ingebrigtsens claim father’s behavior is ‘aggressive and controlling’.
Breaking News: Olympic Champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Brothers Accuse Father of Abuse
(Reuters) – In a shocking revelation, Olympic 1,500 metres champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his brothers Filip and Henrik have come forward with allegations of physical violence and abusive behavior against their father and former coach Gjert Ingebrigtsen. The accusations were published in a column in Norwegian newspaper VG.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen has vehemently denied the allegations.
The family rift has been the subject of intense speculation since Gjert announced his resignation as coach in 2022, shortly after Jakob’s triumphant Olympic gold win in Tokyo.
Gjert had been the coach for Jakob, 23, Filip, 30, and Henrik, 32, since their childhood and throughout most of their careers.
“When we parted ways with Gjert, we hoped to handle the situation privately, without revealing the underlying circumstances,” they wrote in a powerful column published on Thursday.
“However, we now realize that is not possible. The situation has escalated to such an extent that we feel a responsibility to address it publicly.
“We grew up with a father who was extremely aggressive and controlling, resorting to physical violence and threats as part of our upbringing. We still carry the discomfort and fear that has been ingrained in us since childhood.
“Somehow, we accepted this treatment. We lived with it and believed we had moved on in adulthood. But looking back, we now see how naive we were. Two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment resurfaced. It was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.”
Gjert Ingebrigtsen, through his lawyer, responded: “The allegations made against me are completely unfounded.
“I have never resorted to violence against my children. However, I do acknowledge that I have made mistakes as a father and have been overly involved as their coach, a realization that has come to me, albeit too late.”
The conflict reached its boiling point recently when Gjert was denied accreditation by the Norwegian Athletics Association (NFIF) for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
According to media reports in Norway, he also did not attend Jakob’s wedding in September.
Jakob has achieved the most success in athletics, winning gold in the 5,000m at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023. He also claimed the silver medal in the 1,500m at both events.
