Former School District Official Arrested for Embezzling $14 Million
SANTA ANA, Calif.—In a shocking turn of events, a former Magnolia School District official has been apprehended on federal charges of embezzling a staggering $14 million from the Anaheim school district.
Jorge Armando Contreras, a 52-year-old resident of Yorba Linda, is facing allegations of embezzlement from federal funds spanning from August 2016 to July, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Contreras made his initial appearance in federal court in Santa Ana on Thursday, where he was promptly ordered to be held without bond. His arraignment is scheduled for November 27.
Contreras held the position of senior director of fiscal services for the district, which caters to preschool through sixth-grade students in Anaheim and Stanton. He had been employed by the district since 2006 but was placed on administrative leave in August.
Prosecutors have accused Contreras of embezzling approximately $4.1 million out of the total amount between August 2022 and July 2023.
