Trump doesn’t think House speaker feud will harm GOP in 2024: ‘We’ll move on’.
Rep. Byron Donalds Doubts Speaker Race Will Damage GOP in 2024 Election
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), who is vying to become the next speaker of the House, expressed confidence on Sunday that the prolonged battle over the position will not harm his party’s chances in the 2024 general election. Speaking on Fox & Friends, Donalds dismissed concerns raised by co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy about the impact of the speaker race on the upcoming presidential election.
“I don’t think it’s going to damage the presidential election,” Donalds stated. “Let’s be very clear, Joe Biden’s presidency has not been good for the American people. They know that in spite of the impasse in House leadership. I think we’re going to get back to work. I think that we’re going to demonstrate what conservative leadership is in the House of Representatives, and we’re going to be just fine in 2024.”
Donalds officially announced his bid for speaker after Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) failed to secure enough votes in the previous rounds of voting. Emphasizing his ability to listen to his more moderate colleagues while highlighting his conservative credentials, Donalds aims to appeal to both sides of the Republican Party.
Addressing the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, Donalds stressed the importance of a strategic approach. He called for a reversal of the White House’s stance on Iranian sanctions and urged consideration of the significant deficit the U.S. has accumulated this year.
“So it starts also with going back to the Iranian sanctions that were under President Trump and having this White House reverse course on some of their desires with Iran trying to negotiate through the back door, that will be a big step forward to avoiding this global conflict,” Donalds explained. “Number one, we have to evaluate what Ukraine already has. But number two, if the White House is going to say their primary mission now is funding Ukraine, then they need to defund one of their other priorities.”
Additionally, Donalds pledged to release all the footage from the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, a promise that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had previously reneged on due to security concerns.
“I will, absolutely,” Donalds affirmed.

How does Rep. Byron Donalds believe voters will make their decision in the 2024 general election?
Ed. ”While the speaker race is a significant internal party matter, I believe that voters are ultimately going to make their decision based on the policies and leadership of the presidential candidates.”
Donalds acknowledged that the speaker race is an important process within the Republican Party, as it will determine the direction and agenda of the House of Representatives. However, he stressed that the average voter is more concerned with issues that directly affect their lives, such as the economy, healthcare, and national security.
“When voters go to the polls, they are looking for solutions to the challenges they face on a daily basis,” Donalds explained. “They want a president who will prioritize their needs and address the pressing issues of the country. While the speaker race is certainly important, it pales in comparison to the impact that the presidential election will have on their lives.”
This sentiment was echoed by many of Donalds’ colleagues in the Republican Party, who have expressed similar confidence that the speaker race will not overshadow or harm their chances in the 2024 general election. They argue that voters understand the distinction between internal party dynamics and the ultimate decision that they must make at the ballot box.
Furthermore, Donalds pointed out that voters are likely to be more focused on the policies and positions of the presidential candidates rather than the internal workings of the House of Representatives. He emphasized that his focus as a potential speaker will be on advancing a conservative agenda that resonates with the American people and addresses their concerns.
“As a candidate for speaker, my priority is to work with my colleagues to develop and promote policies that reflect the values and principles of the Republican Party,” Donalds stated. “I believe that by doing so, we can present a strong and united front to the American people, and that is what will ultimately determine our success in the 2024 election.”
Donalds also expressed confidence in the resilience and unity of the Republican Party, stating that even a prolonged speaker race will not undermine their ability to come together and support their presidential nominee in the general election.
“The strength of the Republican Party lies in our commitment to conservative principles and our ability to work together towards common goals,” he said. “While there may be differing opinions and strategies within the party, I am confident that we will ultimately unite behind our nominee and present a formidable challenge to the Democratic Party in 2024.”
Despite his optimism, Donalds noted that it is important for the party to address any internal divisions and ensure a smooth and fair speaker race. He emphasized the need for transparency and open dialogue within the party, stressing that a healthy competition for the position will ultimately benefit the party as a whole.
“The speaker race should be an opportunity for Republicans to have a vigorous debate about the future of our party and the direction we want to take,” Donalds said. “By allowing all voices to be heard and engaging in a fair process, we will emerge stronger and better prepared to take on the challenges that lie ahead.”
In conclusion, Rep. Byron Donalds expressed confidence that the prolonged speaker race will not harm the GOP’s chances in the 2024 general election. He emphasized that voters prioritize the policies and leadership of the presidential candidates, and that the internal dynamics of the party are secondary to their decision-making process. Donalds also highlighted the need for transparency and open dialogue within the party, while expressing confidence in the Republican Party’s ability to come together and present a strong challenge to the Democratic Party in 2024.
