As the Israel-Hamas war rages on, data reveals that a growing number of Americans are stocking up on ammunition. Sales of 5.56 NATO caliber ammunition from popular brands have skyrocketed by 39 percent, jumping from 36 cents per round to 50 cents per round between October 14 and October 22, according to Ammo Prices Now, a tracking website. This surge is significantly higher than the increase seen during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
Additionally, sales of .223 Remington ammunition have also surged by 42 percent in the past week. However, the current prices for both types of ammunition are still lower than the peak prices observed in late 2020 and early 2021, when 5.56 rounds reached around 79 cents per round and .223 Remington rounds neared $1 per round.

About a month ago, a top official with the North American Treaty Organization (NATO) warned of a significant rise in ammunition prices, emphasizing that increased defense spending does not necessarily guarantee greater security. This warning came just weeks before Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and raising concerns about a broader conflict in the Middle East.
Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, the chair of NATO’s military committee, expressed his concerns during a meeting, stating, “Prices for equipment and ammunition are shooting up. Right now, we are paying more and more for exactly the same. That means that we cannot make sure that the increased defense spending actually leads to more security.”

Despite these developments, U.S. officials have expressed confidence in their ability to support both Ukraine and Israel in their respective conflicts. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a spokesperson for the Department of Defense, assured reporters that they can meet the defensive needs of both nations.
Ukraine’s Minister for Strategic Industries, Oleksandr Kamyshin, recently urged Western countries to accelerate the production of ammunition, shells, military drones, and missiles. He argued that the current production levels and capacity are insufficient, stating, “The free world should be producing enough to protect itself. That’s why we have to produce more and better weapons to stay safe.”
Furthermore, the Czechoslovak Group, a major arms company based in Prague, has announced its intention to acquire Vista Outdoor Inc.’s Sporting Products business for $1.9 billion. Vista Outdoor Inc. is the parent company of several prominent U.S. ammunition manufacturers, including Federal, Remington, Speer, and CCI. The impact of this acquisition on the U.S. ammunition market remains uncertain, as the deal is expected to close in 2024.
