As the ongoing debacle of electing a House Speaker continues, Republicans have decided on the newest‌ speaker designate.

In a 117-97 vote on the⁣ fifth ballot, Majority Whip Tom‌ Emmer (R-Minn.) defeated Mike⁣ Johnson (R-La.). The vote came after Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Kevin ‍Hearn (R-Okla.), Austin Scott (R-GA.), Jack Bergman⁢ (R-Mich.) ⁣and Pete Sessions (R-Texas) were eliminated in the earlier rounds of voting.

The newly elected speaker‍ designate comes after the failed speakership bids of House ‌Majority Leader⁤ Steve Scalise (R-La.) and⁤ House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio.).

Both candidates dropped out ⁢of the race earlier ⁣this month after being unable to receive enough votes to replace ousted⁤ former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Reportedly after Emmer’s victory, House Republicans took a secret ballot vote to see if Emmer would garner the 217 votes to be elected. Leaving ⁣the meeting, Republican Steve Womack ⁤(R-Ark.), said it was clear Emmer was not close to the number.

Multiple GOP members said over ⁤two dozen voted “present” or for someone ⁤else.

“It should not be surprising to‌ anyone that there is nobody in that room that is going to be able to get 217 votes as we speak,” Womack told‌ reporters.

In an appearance earlier on NBC’s “Meet⁤ the Press⁢ NOW,”‍ Womack said,⁣ “The world is burning around ‍us, and ⁤American leadership is necessary. And you can’t‌ have the full complement of American leadership if the House of Representatives is not functioning.”

It will be an uphill battle for Emmer to receive the 217 votes, with a vote reportedly expected to happen Tuesday evening or Wednesday.

How does passing a spending bill relate to getting the U.S. economy back on track, according to the author?

S ‍watching us right now. I think the Senate needs to act, we need to act aggressively, and we ⁤need to pass a spending bill ⁤because it’s a ⁤very important for getting the U.S. economy back on track.”

While the defeat of Tom Emmer on the initial House floor vote was a⁣ disappointment for Republicans, his victory ‌in the Republican conference vote now establishes him as the party’s nominee for the‌ position of Speaker of the House. Emmer thanked his fellow Republicans for their‌ support and vowed to work tirelessly to unite the party and advance their agenda.

The next step ‌in the process is for Emmer to ⁢gain the support of at least 217 members ⁢in a formal floor vote. This will require some level of bipartisan support ⁢as ‌Democrats hold a ⁢slim majority in the⁣ House. The fate of Emmer’s speakership will ultimately depend ⁣on whether he can garner enough votes to secure the position.

However, there are‌ doubts about Emmer’s ability to unite the Republican party and gain the necessary support. Many members still hold strong allegiances to former Speaker McCarthy‌ and feel that Emmer’s victory was a result of internal divisions within the party rather than genuine support for⁤ his candidacy.

Furthermore, some Republicans believe that⁤ the defeat ⁤of strong contenders like Steve Scalise and Jim ⁢Jordan‍ reflects a lack of direction and leadership within the party. The Republican party is currently grappling with deep ideological divisions, with some members aligning themselves ⁢with⁣ former President Donald Trump and⁢ his populist agenda, while others advocate for a more moderate⁤ and inclusive approach.

As House Republicans navigate this ‍challenging political landscape, the selection of their next Speaker will be crucial in determining the direction of the party moving⁣ forward. The Speaker of the House holds significant power and ⁣influence, shaping the legislative agenda and serving as a ⁣spokesperson for the party.

The ongoing battle for the⁢ speakership ‌underscores the internal struggles and divisions within the Republican party. With the midterm elections approaching, Republicans must find a way to bridge these divides and present a unified front to voters.

Whether ⁤Tom‍ Emmer can rise to the occasion and unite the party remains to be seen. The upcoming floor vote will⁤ reveal whether he has⁤ the‌ support necessary to become the next⁢ Speaker of the House, or if the Republican party will need to ⁣continue its search for a ‍leader who ‍can bring them together and navigate the challenges ahead.

Until then, Republicans will continue to grapple with the fallout ⁣of the speakership race and the internal divisions that have been laid bare. The selection of ⁣the next Speaker will have far-reaching implications for the Republican party ⁤and its ability to effectively govern ‍and advance its agenda.
