A Man Arrested for Threatening Mass Shooting at University of Arizona
A man has been arrested after recently released documents revealed his plans to commit a mass shooting at the University of Arizona.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Michael Pengchung Lee, was apprehended after authorities were alerted to the situation on Sunday evening.
According to documents released by the District of Arizona, Lee made threats in a Snapchat group chat under the username “asianluluu,” specifically targeting the university’s Greek Life. He expressed his intention to carry out a mass shooting at the school.
After being closely monitored, Lee was arrested on Monday. In his messages, he explicitly stated his plans to commit the act of violence using an “AR-15.”
“I’m gonna do it guys, my mind is made up and there’s nothing u (sic) can do or say to stop me,” Lee said in the interim complaint.
The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) confirmed that Lee has no affiliation with the school. He is now facing charges for making a terroristic threat. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) assisted in the investigation and mentioned the possibility of federal charges in the future.
Lee is currently held at Pima County Jail on a $7,500 bond.
According to a recent document released by the UofA Office of Public Safety, there is no ongoing or imminent threat to the university community from Lee, and no other suspects are being sought.
“We want the community to know this case is an example of a successful collaborative effort among UAPD, the Threat Assessment and Management Team (TAMT), and the FBI’s Southern Arizona Violent Crime and Gang Task Force,” said UofA Chief Safety Officer Steve Patterson.
As of now, Lee does not have legal representation, according to federal court records.
