Fact Check: Is Israel an Apartheid State?
Fact Check: Is Israel a Colonized Apartheid State?
On Oct. 7, the world witnessed the most horrific attack against the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Hamas, the Democratically-elected political authority of the Gaza Strip, launched a barrage of rockets at Israel, providing cover for their troops to invade the Jewish state and commit a massacre of innocent civilians. The Associated Press reported that approximately 1,400 people were killed in this brutal attack.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, many in the Western world began to push back against Israel’s defensive counterattack. Left-wing protests emerged, defending the Palestinian people and even expressing support for Hamas. These protests are fueled by two recurring claims: that Israel is a colonized state that “stole” the land from Arab Palestinians, and that Israel is currently practicing apartheid against its non-Jewish population.
But are these claims true?
FACT-CHECK: Was the nation of Israel stolen from the Palestinian people, and is its current government enacting apartheid against its Arab population?
CONCLUSION: False on both counts.
Both of these claims are completely baseless. A thorough examination of the region’s history and Israeli policy reveals the truth.
Did the Jewish People “Colonize” So-Called “Palestine”?: Israel’s Ownership Claim
The Jewish claim to the land of Israel dates back to Biblical times. After the Israelites were led out of Egyptian slavery by Moses, they eventually arrived in the Promised Land, known as the land of Canaan. By 1000 B.C., the kingdom of David was established, making the Jewish people the indigenous inhabitants of Israel. The only other group to live in the region before the Israelites were the Canaanites, who have since disappeared from history.
Over the centuries, various empires and nations controlled the region, including the Romans who named it “Palestine” in an attempt to erase its Jewish history. However, the Jewish claim to the land remains legitimate.
Did the Jewish People “Colonize” So-Called “Palestine”?: The Palestinian Territories Belong to Israel
In 1948, Israel proclaimed its independence, but the surrounding Arab nations rejected the idea of a Jewish state and launched attacks against Israel. Despite these attacks, Israel survived and a ceasefire was agreed upon in 1949. The West Bank and Gaza Strip came under the control of Jordan and Egypt, respectively, but these changes in ownership had no legal standing according to international law.
In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel regained control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This was not an “occupation” but a reclaiming of their own land. Israel has a legal right to occupy these territories due to repeated attacks launched against them by Palestinian groups.
Is Israel an Apartheid State?
Since the Oct. 7 terror attacks, there have been accusations that Israel is an apartheid state, similar to the racial segregation policies of South Africa. However, these claims are unfounded. Amnesty International has accused Israel of apartheid, but their selective reporting and biased perspective undermine their credibility.
The reality is that Israel is not an apartheid state. Jews and Arabs live side by side in Israel, while areas under Palestinian control are completely devoid of Jewish communities. The Palestinian Authority enforces policies that exclude Jews and incite violence against them.
Accusing Israel of apartheid is an inversion of the truth. Israel has made efforts to peacefully coexist with its neighbors, while Palestinian groups have consistently rejected opportunities for a two-state solution and engaged in acts of terrorism against Israel.
Claims of apartheid against Israel are not only false but also serve to delegitimize the existence of the Jewish state. It is important to separate fact from fiction and understand the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

What role does fact-checking play in evaluating the claims of apartheid in Israel and promoting understanding in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Currently Enacting Apartheid?: Examining Israeli Policy
The claim that Israel is practicing apartheid is a misrepresentation of the facts. Apartheid refers to a system of racial segregation and discrimination, as was practiced in South Africa. However, in Israel, all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity or religion, have equal rights and are treated equally under the law.
Arab-Israelis, who make up about 20% of the population, have the same rights as Jewish-Israelis. They have the right to vote, hold positions in the government, and serve in the military if they choose to. Arab-Israelis also hold positions in the judiciary, academia, and other sectors of society.
The West Bank and Gaza Strip are not part of the Israeli territory, but rather a disputed territory that Israel has control over due to security concerns. Palestinians in these territories have their own governing bodies, such as the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. While there are restrictions on movement and security measures in place, these are necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of all individuals in the region.
The Importance of Fact-Checking
In times of conflict and political unrest, it is crucial to fact-check claims before forming opinions or taking action. The claims that Israel is a colonized apartheid state are not supported by historical evidence or Israeli policy. Promoting these false narratives only serves to further divide communities and worsen the situation on the ground.
It is important to approach complex political issues with nuance and an understanding of the historical context. Israel, like any other nation, has the right to protect its citizens and ensure its security. At the same time, efforts should be made to find a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and promote dialogue and understanding between all parties involved.
Conclusion
The claims that Israel is a colonized apartheid state are false. Israel has a legitimate claim to the land, dating back to Biblical times, and its current government does not practice apartheid. Arab-Israelis have equal rights and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have their own governing bodies. It is important to fact-check claims and approach political issues with a balanced and informed perspective to foster understanding and work towards peace.
