A woman in Studio City, California, is sharing the terrifying experience her family went through when a man stormed into their house early on Wednesday morning and made threats to murder them while screaming derogatory remarks directed at Jews.
Los Angeles Police said the break-in occurred in the 3000 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard at around 5:20 a.m. PST.
While nine months pregnant, the woman told KTLA‘s Ellina Abovian that the burglar initially kicked in their master bedroom door, and her spouse argued and fought with him while she dialed 9-1-1.
“[He said] I’m going to kill you because you are Jewish… Israel kills people,” he said [allegedly].
At the time, the couple’s four children were also present at home.
The woman claims that her husband ultimately managed to pull the burglar out of their house and into their backyard after a long struggle.
When police came, they discovered him in the backyard carrying a kitchen knife, according to Key News.
Key News footage reveals that as he was handcuffed and put in a police car, he yelled, “Free Palestine” and “Brown Lives Matter,” before being taken into jail without any more incidents.
There were no reported injuries or stolen items.
The homeowner believes that the invader, Daniel Garcia, who was named by the authorities, may have been drunk and also said that when he first entered their property around a year ago, he asked them about their Jewish history and links to Israel.
They believe he may have been alerted by their mezzuzah, which is a common item in Jewish homes attached to the doorframe.
This incident occurs during the third week of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, made a statement regarding the incident.
“In the wake of the terror and violence inflicted over the previous weeks, this is one of the worst fears of Jewish families across our country—hatred spilling across the threshold, destroying the sense of safety and sanctuary in a home.”
The mayor emphasized her support for Los Angeles’ Jewish community.
“The people of Los Angeles will not cower to hate. We will respond to it … We will always stand.”
