MALIBU, Calif.—Solstice Canyon Reopens After Mountain Lion Encounter
In a thrilling turn of events, Solstice Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area has reopened its doors to visitors. The popular hiking spot had been temporarily closed due to a heart-stopping encounter with a mountain lion.
“An individual walking a small dog on a leash was injured when a young mountain lion attempted to attack the dog,” according to a statement from the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
“While intervening, the person received a scratch and puncture wound on their hand. National Park Service rangers provided first aid on scene. The dog was not injured. A second young mountain lion was also in the immediate area during the incident,” the statement said.
As a precautionary measure, the Solstice Canyon area had been temporarily closed until 8 a.m. Thursday. But now, adventure seekers can once again explore the breathtaking beauty of this natural wonder.
The heart-pounding lion attack took place on a Tuesday morning, leaving visitors in shock. However, park officials quickly took action.
“Wildlife biologists are in the area to assess the situation,” according to park officials.
Seth Riley, the wildlife branch chief for the U.S. National Park Service, shared some reassuring news about the incident. He stated, “The person’s injury was just a scratch, basically, with minor injuries. They were able to heroically protect their dog from the lion’s clutches.”
