Manhunt ongoing in Maine as shelter-in-place order lifted.
Law enforcement ends shelter-in-place order as manhunt for suspected mass shooter continues
The town of Lewiston, Maine, can breathe a sigh of relief as law enforcement has finally lifted the shelter-in-place order. However, the manhunt for suspected mass shooter Robert Card is far from over.
This decision comes after Card allegedly committed a horrifying act, shooting and killing 18 people at two different locations in the town. The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant during this time.
Remaining vigilant and cautious
Mike Sauschuck, commissioner for the Maine Department of Public Safety, addressed the public at a press conference on Friday evening. He explained the careful consideration that went into the decision to lift the shelter-in-place order.
“The decision to release that, or rescind that, shelter-in-place order is something that we’ve discussed internally as command staff members at the CP and saying OK, we’re looking at pros and cons. We’ve got communities that are locked down, that are shut down, there are families and schools and pharmacies and all those things,” Sauschuck said.
While acknowledging the negative impact of the order on people’s lives, Sauschuck emphasized the importance of taking the threats seriously.
“So we knew going in and have acknowledged that repeatedly that we know that that can have a negative impact on people. So the other side of that is we had very pointed threats early on in reference to these locations, and nothing specific since then.”
Despite the lifting of the order, Sauschuck stressed that the manhunt is still a dangerous situation. He urged the public to listen to law enforcement and remain cautious.
“While this is still absolutely a dangerous situation without question, we’ve got to make recommendations and ask the people that we serve as the people that we protect, to be vigilant, to pay attention, to listen to what we have to say,” he said.
Victims’ identities confirmed
Sauschuck also confirmed the identities of the 18 victims who tragically lost their lives in the shooting. Their names are Ronald Morin, Peyton Brewer-Ross, Joshua Seal, Brian MacFarlane, Joseph Lawrence Walker, Arthur Fred Strout, Maxx Hathaway, Stephen Vozella, Thomas Ryan Conrad, Michael R. Deslaurier II, Jason Adam Walker, Trisha Asselin, William Young, Aaron Young, Robert Violette, Lucille Violette, William Frank Bracket, and Keith McNair.
It was later reported by CNN that Card had legally purchased the weapon used in the shooting. He had previously been hospitalized for mental health reasons over the summer, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
Card remains at large, and the search for him will continue. The next update from law enforcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday.

How has technology, such as surveillance cameras and social media platforms, aided law enforcement efforts in tracking the movements of the suspect?
Hat has an impact on their daily lives. And so we need to weigh that against the potential threat that this individual poses,” said Sauschuck.
He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and cautious. While the shelter-in-place order may have been lifted, it does not mean that the threat has disappeared. The manhunt for Robert Card is ongoing, and authorities are still actively searching for him.
Sauschuck urged the public to report any suspicious activity or sightings. He asked residents to keep an eye out for any unusual behavior, and to not hesitate in contacting law enforcement if they believe they have seen him.
Cooperation and support from the community
In times like these, it is crucial for the community to come together and support law enforcement efforts. The importance of cooperation was emphasized by Sauschuck during the press conference.
“We need the community to be our eyes and ears. We need their support as we work to locate and apprehend this dangerous individual,” he said.
Local businesses and organizations have also played their part by providing assistance and resources to law enforcement. Members of the community have offered their support in organizing search parties and distributing information about the suspect.
The role of technology
Technology has been instrumental in aiding law enforcement during this manhunt. Surveillance cameras and other technological tools have been critical in tracking the movements of the suspect.
In addition, social media platforms have been utilized to disseminate information and reach a wider audience. Authorities have used these platforms to issue timely updates, share suspect descriptions, and encourage the public to remain alert.
Furthermore, the public has actively participated in the manhunt through sharing information and spreading awareness. The power of social media has been harnessed to create a collective effort in locating the suspect.
Continuing efforts
As law enforcement continues their search for Robert Card, the community remains on high alert. Authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents, and they are grateful for the support they have received from the community.
While the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, it is essential for residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity. The collaboration between law enforcement and the community is key to the success of the manhunt and the eventual apprehension of the suspect.
