Man, 50, allowed to compete against 13-year-old girls in swimming competition, but later attempts to deny it.
Regional Swimming Competition Allows 50-Year-Old Man to Compete Against 13-Year-Old Girls, Then Tries to Deny It
A recent swimming competition in Canada has sparked controversy after a 50-year-old man who claims to be transgender was allowed to race against 13- and 14-year-old girls. The incident took place at Toronto’s Markham Pan Am Centre during the Richmond Hill Aquatic Centre’s Fall Classic swim meet.
The swimmer, who competed under the name “Melody Wiseheart,” was listed as 50 years old on the meet program. However, it was later revealed that “Melody Wiseheart” is actually a male-born transgender swimmer named Nicholas J. Cepeda.

When questioned about the decision to allow Cepeda to compete against teenagers, the organizers initially denied his participation. However, they later admitted that he did compete in the category against 13- and 14-year-old girls after being shown a printed copy of the swim meet’s roster.
Swimming Canada, the governing body for swimming in the region, stated that swimmers are allowed to compete as their declared gender. They also emphasized that organizers of each competition set the age categories.
Despite the controversy, Cepeda’s participation was defended by some, while others, such as former NCAA swimming champion Riley Gaines, expressed their dismay.

It is worth noting that Cepeda is a professor in the psychology department at Toronto’s York University, where he is listed under the name “Dr. Melody Wiseheart.” He specializes in various fields, including aging, children, youth, and cognitive processes.
While the controversy surrounding Cepeda’s participation continues, it remains unclear whether he was allowed to use the girls’ locker room for the swim meet.
