California’s First Snowfall of the Winter Surprises with More Than Expected Accumulation
California experienced its first significant snowfall of the winter season in the Sierra Nevada mountains, near Lake Tahoe, on October 26. The Central Sierra Snow Lab at the University of California–Berkeley reported a surprising 3.9 inches of snow in just 24 hours near Donner Summit.
In a social media post, the lab expressed their excitement about the unexpected snowfall, which mostly occurred on Wednesday.
“The storm surprised us by bringing snow instead of rain, resulting in slightly higher accumulation than the forecasted 1-3 inches. Let’s hope this trend of exceeding expectations continues!” the lab enthusiastically shared on Facebook.
Earlier this year, the region experienced record-breaking snowfall as multiple major storms swept through. In March, the lab recorded an impressive 56.4 feet of snow in the central Sierras, ranking it as the sixth highest snowfall in the region’s history.
The abundant snowpack attracted numerous skiers to the slopes and extended the ski season well into spring.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service do not anticipate further snowfall in the area for the upcoming weekend or during the Halloween activities in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday.
