Biden justifies Syria air strikes: ‘Needed and fair’
President Biden Defends Military Strikes on Iran-Linked Sites
President Joe Biden passionately defended the recent military strikes on two Syria-based sites reportedly connected to Iran, asserting that they were both necessary and proportionate. In a letter addressed to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senator Patty Murray, Biden outlined his justification for the October 26 attack, which targeted locations allegedly affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The strikes, carried out by F-16 aircraft, specifically targeted a weapons storage area and an ammunition storage area, as confirmed by military officials. Biden’s letter, filed in compliance with the War Powers Resolution, highlights the President’s adherence to international law and the United States’ inherent right of self-defense.
“The United States took this necessary and proportionate action consistent with international law and in the exercise of the United States’ inherent right of self-defense as reflected in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter,” Biden wrote. “The United States stands ready to take further action, as necessary and appropriate, to address further threats or attacks.”
Recent attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria prompted these strikes. Between October 17 and October 26, American forces faced 19 attacks, resulting in injuries to 21 service members. The attacks, carried out using one-way attack drones and rockets, targeted al Asad Air Base in Iraq and the al Tanf garrison in Syria.
A senior defense official firmly placed responsibility on Iran for these attacks, stating, “Let’s be clear, Iran is responsible.” While the United States does not seek conflict or further hostilities, the official emphasized that the Iran-backed attacks against U.S. forces are unacceptable and must cease. The U.S. remains prepared to take additional measures to protect its people if necessary.
It is worth noting that the U.S. did not inform Israel of the strikes in advance, according to the senior defense official. Additionally, National Security Council coordinator John Kirby revealed that a direct message was relayed to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

How does President Biden’s decision to inform Congress and seek diplomatic engagement with Iran reflect his approach to national security and foreign policy
He President emphasized that the strikes aimed to protect the safety and security of American troops stationed in the region, as well as to deter further Iranian aggression. In recent months, there has been a concerning rise in attacks by Iran-backed militia groups against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. These attacks included the deadly rocket strike on a U.S. military base in Erbil, which killed a civilian contractor and injured several others.
Biden’s decision to carry out the strikes was not taken lightly. It followed a thorough assessment by the Department of Defense, intelligence agencies, and his national security team. The President viewed these strikes as a necessary response to the escalating threats posed by Iran and its proxies. The attack was designed to send a clear message that the United States will not tolerate attacks on its personnel or facilities. As President Biden stated, “I have directed this action… to protect and defend American personnel and facilities in Iraq.”
The President also highlighted the proportionality of the strikes. The targets were carefully selected to avoid civilian casualties and minimize collateral damage. The precise nature of the strikes was a clear departure from the reckless conduct seen during the previous administration. President Biden made it clear that the United States would act decisively but responsibly, taking into account the potential consequences of military actions.
Furthermore, Biden’s decision to inform Congress of the military strikes within 48 hours, as mandated by the War Powers Resolution, demonstrates his commitment to transparency and accountability. He recognizes the importance of congressional oversight in matters of national security and sought to provide lawmakers with the necessary information to make informed judgments. This approach stands in stark contrast to the disregard for congressional input exhibited by past presidents.
In his letter, President Biden reiterated his commitment to diplomatic engagement with Iran and expressed his willingness to return to the negotiating table to address the ongoing nuclear concerns. He emphasized that his administration remains firm in its resolve to curb Iran’s malign activities while also seeking a peaceful resolution. By striking a balance between military action and diplomacy, President Biden aims to de-escalate tensions in the region and restore stability.
It is crucial to recognize that President Biden’s decision to defend military strikes on Iran-linked sites was not taken lightly but was motivated by a sincere desire to protect American personnel, deter future aggression, and promote stability in the region. The President’s commitment to transparency, proportionality, and diplomatic engagement sets a positive tone for his administration’s approach to foreign policy. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these actions will impact the relationship between the United States and Iran, as well as the broader dynamics in the Middle East.
