House Democrats engage in heated exchange over Israel, labeling one another as cowards.
House Democrats Clash Over Resolution Supporting Israel in War Against Hamas
House Democrats are engaged in a heated exchange of insults regarding a resolution that expresses support for Israel in its battle against Hamas, following the terrorist group’s recent attacks on Israeli soil.
During an interview with CNN’s Manu Raju, Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN), one of the nine Democrats who voted against the resolution, criticized Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) for his social media post condemning the defectors.
Dem tensions over Israel: After Rep Josh Gottheimer called Ds who voted against Israel resolution “despicable,” Rep. Andre Carson calls him a “punk” and “cowardly.”

Carson expressed his opinion on Gottheimer, stating, “I think he’s not acting in the role as a member of Congress. I think he’s shown himself to be very emotional. Like most cowardly people, when you confront them, they’re afraid. I’m unafraid of the guy and if he wants to call us despicable, I’m saying he’s a coward and he’s a punk.” Carson added, “He should remember why the people sent him here. And if he wants to play some kind of tough guy or gangster, we can handle it like gentlemen, or we can get into something else.”
Gottheimer targeted the nine Democratic holdouts, including members of the leftist “Squad,” as well as six others who voted “present,” in a post on Thursday.
“Last night, 15 of my Democratic colleagues voted AGAINST standing with our ally Israel and condemning Hamas terrorists who brutally murdered, raped, and kidnapped babies, children, men, women, and the elderly, including Americans,” Gottheimer said. “They are despicable and do not speak for our party.”
During the CNN program “Inside Politics,” Raju shared a statement from Gottheimer in response to Carson’s remarks. Gottheimer expressed his willingness to meet with Carson to discuss bringing the hostages home, providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians, and combating terrorism.
Raju also mentioned that Gottheimer and Carson are likely to have a meeting, according to a “Democratic leadership source.”
The resolution, titled “Standing with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists,” was approved by the House with a vote of 412-10. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) was the only Republican who opposed it, joining the nine Democrats. Massie explained his reasoning in a post, expressing concerns about certain provisions while affirming Israel’s right to self-defense.
How do proponents of the resolution argue that it reaffirms the alliance between the United States and Israel, and why do they believe it is important for Democrats to present a united front on this issue

Carson retaliated by calling Gottheimer a “punk” and a “cowardly”, questioning his toughness and issuing a veiled threat. This exchange highlights the deep divide within the Democratic Party when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
While Democrats have traditionally been supportive of Israel, there is a growing progressive wing within the party that is more critical of Israeli actions and policies. This divide has been exacerbated by the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, with some Democrats calling for a more balanced approach.
The resolution in question, introduced by Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), was a bipartisan effort aimed at expressing solidarity with Israel and condemning Hamas for its acts of terrorism. It passed with overwhelming support, with 420 members voting in favor and only nine Democrats voting against it.
Those who voted against the resolution, including Rep. Carson, argued that it did not adequately address the root causes of the conflict and instead focused solely on Israel’s right to defend itself. They believe that a more nuanced approach is needed, one that takes into account the suffering of Palestinians and the need for a peaceful resolution.
On the other hand, proponents of the resolution argue that Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks and that Hamas’s actions should be unequivocally condemned. They view the resolution as a reaffirmation of the long-standing alliance between the United States and Israel and a message of support to a key ally in a volatile region.
The clash between House Democrats over this resolution underscores the broader debate within the party over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It reflects a tension between those who prioritize Israel’s security and those who advocate for a more comprehensive approach that also takes into consideration the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people.
It is important for Democrats to find common ground and foster dialogue on this issue, rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric and personal attacks. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex and deeply rooted issue, and it requires thoughtful and nuanced discussions to find a just and lasting solution.
Regardless of political differences, it is crucial for Democrats to present a united front when it comes to maintaining a strong and unwavering commitment to the security of Israel. This does not mean blindly supporting every action taken by the Israeli government, but rather engaging in constructive dialogue and advocating for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians.
The House Democrats must find a way to bridge their differences and work together to address this pressing issue. This can only be achieved through respectful and constructive dialogue that focuses on finding common ground and advancing a balanced and comprehensive approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Ultimately, the goal should be to support a just and lasting peace that ensures the security and well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians. This requires a commitment to dialogue, understanding, and a willingness to challenge preconceived notions and engage in constructive debate.
As House Democrats continue to clash over the resolution supporting Israel in its war against Hamas, it is imperative that they recognize the importance of unity and constructive engagement. Only through working together can they hope to make progress in finding a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict.
