Saudi Arabia to Host World’s Biggest Sports Tournament in 2034
The exciting news broke on Tuesday as Saudi Arabia emerged as the chosen host for the world’s biggest sports tournament in 2034. This decision came after Australia, the only other interested country, backed out at the last minute, leaving Saudi Arabia as the sole contender.
“We have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition,” a statement from Football Australia said Tuesday, just hours before FIFA’s deadline for declarations of interest.
FIFA had asked for bids from Asia and Oceania for the tournament by Tuesday, and Saudi Arabia announced it would bid minutes after the announcement of hosting came on October 4th.
However, the soccer organization said it will “conduct thorough bidding and evaluation processes” for the 2030 and 2034 tournaments.
This historic decision makes Saudi Arabia the second Arab Gulf country to ever host the global tournament, following Qatar’s successful hosting in 2022.
Meanwhile, the 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, with the first three matches set to take place in South America.
However, this choice has faced criticism from human rights activists who oppose FIFA’s decision to grant Saudi Arabia the hosting rights. They argue that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s acknowledgment of “bad laws” in the country raises concerns about human rights violations.
In recent months, Saudi Arabia has made significant investments in sports, including the surprising merger of the newly developed LIV Golf league with the PGA tour. According to the Guardian, the country has spent $6.1 billion on sports investments between 2021 and June 2023.
