BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Legendary Coach Bob Knight Passes Away at 83
The basketball world mourns the loss of Bob Knight, the brilliant and fiery coach who brought three NCAA titles to Indiana. Knight, known for his scowling demeanor, passed away at the age of 83.
Announced by his family on social media, Knight spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones at his home in Bloomington, Indiana.
A true coaching icon, Knight achieved remarkable success throughout his career, amassing 902 victories in 42 seasons at Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech. He also led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1984.
Known as “The General,” Knight was unapologetically himself and cared little about others’ opinions. In 2007, after securing his 880th win, a Division I men’s coach record at the time, he celebrated with Frank Sinatra’s iconic song “My Way.”
However, Knight’s temper often overshadowed his accomplishments. His infamous outbursts included hitting a police officer in Puerto Rico, throwing a chair across the court, and allegedly choking a player.
Despite his controversial behavior, Knight had a legion of defenders. He took pride in his players’ high graduation rates and remained untainted by major NCAA violations during a time of rampant rule-breaking.
