First hydrogen-powered train arriving in Southern California.

San Bernardino County Awaits Arrival of Zero-Emission Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Train

San Bernardino County, California, is eagerly anticipating the ⁤arrival of a groundbreaking zero-emission hydrogen-powered passenger train from Switzerland.‌ This innovative ⁢train, the first of its kind in the United States, will be operated by Metrolink, ⁢running along a nine-mile track between downtown San Bernardino and the University of Redlands, with four stops along the way.

According to⁢ Tim Watkins, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), “We think we needed a zero-emission solution. That’s why we‍ pursued this and we’re very excited to be‍ bringing the first⁣ into service.”

SBCTA launched passenger‍ service to Redlands⁢ last year, and the county’s ‌transportation authority collaborated with the California State Transportation Agency ⁣and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) ‍to acquire the Swiss-made Stadler train in 2018. This purchase was made possible ⁢through a $30 million state grant from the California Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program.

The funds were used to develop and purchase one 2-car train ⁤set and⁢ convert⁢ two 2-car diesel train sets into zero-emission trains.

Following the success of SBCTA’s deal, Caltrans has also embraced eco-friendly trains. The agency recently announced the purchase of four ‌trains based on the same hydrogen-powered technology⁤ for $80 million. These trains will ⁢operate on the “Valley Rail” service, running between Sacramento ‌and Merced, and are expected to be in service by early 2027.

According to Nicole Mowers,⁤ spokeswoman for Caltrans, “These are complete trainsets—passenger areas and hydrogen fuel-powered engines built together—like a BART or light rail train. This is, in part, why they⁤ are more efficient ‌(lighter weight) and more affordable than‍ traditional sets‍ of locomotive and coaches.”

San Bernardino’s train arrived in the U.S. in September and is scheduled to be in service in the fall of 2024. The county’s transportation authority staff members had the opportunity to see the train ⁤at an expo in Florida last month.

“It was very exciting to see how people were⁣ experiencing these clean-air, quiet trains,” said Mr. Watkins.

The hydrogen-powered trains are based on ⁢Stadler’s fast, light, intercity, and regional train (FLIRT) concept for electric-powered railcars. Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler‍ US, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It is great to be part of California’s move toward eco-friendly travel with ‌another zero-emission project in the state, and we look⁣ forward to continuing our work with the California State Transportation Agency and Caltrans to make this‍ a reality.”

The new hydrogen-powered train is an important ⁢step towards achieving the‍ county’s sustainability goals. ⁢It ⁢is estimated to‍ reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.25 million pounds ⁢per year, equivalent to the emissions‌ of approximately ⁤1,500‍ cars.

The train runs on ‍electricity generated by fuel cells that convert hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapor as⁢ a byproduct. This clean and‍ efficient technology significantly reduces pollution and carbon emissions, contributing to a greener transportation system for ‌San Bernardino County.

The zero-emission train will provide a comfortable and convenient mode of transportation for residents⁤ and visitors in the area. It features spacious seating, Wi-Fi connectivity, and ⁣modern amenities to ⁢enhance the passenger experience. With a maximum ⁢speed of 79 miles per hour, the train will be able ⁣to transport commuters and ⁤students between⁢ downtown San Bernardino and‌ the University of Redlands in a timely manner.

The arrival of‌ the hydrogen-powered train aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting clean and sustainable transportation options. California has recently been awarded $1.2 billion for hydrogen fuel development and President Biden announced $7 billion for seven ‘clean’ hydrogen energy hubs.⁢ These investments‌ emphasize the‍ growing importance of hydrogen as a renewable energy source in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

The San Bernardino County ‍Transportation Authority is proud to be at the forefront of this clean energy revolution. The introduction of the hydrogen-powered passenger train not only showcases the ⁢county’s ‍commitment to a sustainable future but also sets an example for⁢ other regions to ⁤follow.

The new‌ train is scheduled to arrive in San Bernardino County in early 2024. Once it enters service, it will not only provide efficient transportation but also inspire a shift towards zero-emission technologies ‌in the broader transport sector. With its eco-friendly operations and cutting-edge design, the hydrogen-powered train is poised to revolutionize public transportation in San Bernardino County and serve as a model for other communities ‌seeking to embrace sustainable transit options.
