A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 and a subsequent aftershock measuring 4.0 has struck Northwestern Nepal, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 157 lives.
According to officials, the Jajarkot district, known for its agricultural activities, has witnessed 105 fatalities, while the nearby Rukum district has reported 52 deaths. Additionally, 184 individuals have been injured.
The initial earthquake struck at approximately 11:47 p.m. local time on Friday, and its tremors were felt in neighboring India and China. This was followed by an aftershock at 4:16 a.m. on Saturday.
Local media reports indicate that most casualties occurred due to people being trapped under debris as their houses collapsed.
The high death toll can be attributed to residents being asleep during the earthquake and the lack of reinforcement in the construction of houses, which were primarily made of rocks and logs.
Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to assure the affected communities that the government is working tirelessly to provide relief. He mentioned that tents, food, and medicine have been airlifted to support the thousands of displaced individuals.
Bimal Kumar Karki, one of the survivors who was rescued and brought to the regional hospital, shared his harrowing experience of the earthquake.
“I was fast asleep when all of a sudden it started shaking violently. I tried to run but the whole house collapsed. I tried escaping but half my body got buried in the debris,” said Karki. “I screamed, but every one of my neighbors was in the same situation and screaming for help. It took nearly a half-hour to an hour before rescuers found me.”
Throughout the night, security personnel worked tirelessly with villagers to rescue injured individuals from the rubble of collapsed houses.
Authorities have warned that the death toll is likely to rise as search and rescue efforts continue in the affected areas.
