EV sales in California surge by almost 60% in 2021.
California Leads the Nation in Electric Vehicle Adoption
California drivers are embracing electric vehicles at an impressive rate, outpacing the rest of the country. According to a report by the California New Car Dealers Association, electric vehicles accounted for nearly 22 percent of the state’s new vehicle market in the first nine months of 2023.
In the third quarter of 2023, California surpassed the national average for new electric vehicle registrations by a full percentage point, achieving a 13.3 percent improvement over 2022. This surge in electric vehicle adoption contributed to a total of almost 1.4 million new vehicle registrations in the state during the first nine months of the year.
Interestingly, the percentage of buyers opting for traditional vehicles with internal-combustion engines decreased, dropping from 72 percent in 2022 to 65 percent in 2023. In contrast, electric vehicle and hybrid car purchases increased to 35 percent of all sales, a significant jump from 12 percent in 2018.
California leads the nation in new electric vehicle registrations, accounting for approximately one-third of all state vehicle sales.

Tesla dominates the electric vehicle market in California, capturing nearly 63 percent of all new electric vehicle registrations by September. The Model Y is the top choice among luxury compact sports utility vehicle buyers, with 106,000 new registrations. Additionally, the Model 3 is the most popular passenger car in the state, with nearly 67,000 new registrations.
Overall, new car registrations grew by 14 percent during the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, as reported on Nov. 1.
Toyota emerged as the top-selling brand with a 15-percent market share, followed closely by Tesla at nearly 14 percent. Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, and Kia also secured significant market shares.
“Meeting our customers’ needs, whether it’s for internal-combustion vehicles, hybrids, or new EV options, is our top priority,” said Tony Toohey, chairman of the car association and owner of Auburn Toyota. “As a local new car dealer, we strive to offer a variety of vehicle options at price points that suit our customers’ individual circumstances.”
The California New Car Dealers Association predicts that the state will end the year with 1.8 million new vehicle registrations and expects an additional 1.88 million in 2024.
“Pent-up demand remains high since the pandemic and is estimated to continue supporting new vehicle sales for years to come,” stated the association in a press release.
However, high interest rates are making cars less affordable as household savings accounts are depleted. Additionally, the recent United Auto Workers strike and its impact on new vehicle sales are factors to watch closely.

California, often at the forefront of environmental initiatives, is once again leading the nation in the adoption of electric vehicles. As the demand for more sustainable transportation options continues to grow, the state is making significant progress in reducing its reliance on traditional vehicles with internal-combustion engines.
A recent report by the California New Car Dealers Association reveals that electric vehicles accounted for nearly 22 percent of the state’s new vehicle market in the first nine months of 2023. This statistic shows a remarkable increase in their popularity, as the proportion of electric vehicle sales has almost tripled since 2018 when they constituted only 12 percent of all sales.
The surge in electric vehicle adoption is evident in the numbers. In the third quarter of 2023, California saw a 13.3 percent improvement in new electric vehicle registrations compared to 2022, surpassing the national average by a full percentage point. This growth contributed to a total of almost 1.4 million new vehicle registrations in the state during the first nine months of the year.
Alongside the rise in electric vehicle sales, there has been a decrease in buyers opting for traditional vehicles with internal-combustion engines. The percentage of such purchases dropped from 72 percent in 2022 to 65 percent in 2023. This trend suggests that Californian drivers are increasingly recognizing the environmental benefits of electric vehicles and are actively choosing them as a more sustainable alternative.
California’s leading position in the adoption of electric vehicles becomes even more apparent when considering its share of national vehicle sales. The state accounts for approximately one-third of all new electric vehicle registrations in the country, solidifying its role as a trailblazer in the transition to cleaner transportation.
The success of electric vehicle adoption in California can be attributed to a combination of factors. The state’s strong focus on environmental policies and commitment to renewable energy have created a supportive environment for electric vehicle infrastructure and charging stations. In addition, financial incentives and rebates offered to electric vehicle buyers, along with advancements in battery technology, have made electric vehicles more affordable and convenient than ever before.
