A small town Alabama mayor tragically took his own life after being involuntarily exposed for dressing up as a transgender woman on social media.
The mayor of Smiths Station, F.L. “Bubba” Copeland, tragically died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday evening following a police pursuit.
Police officers were responding to a welfare check on Copeland when they spotted him driving.
They attempted to pull him over, but he stopped, got out of the car, and shot himself.
Sheriff Jay Jones stated that there were no outstanding warrants or reasons to stop Copeland other than the welfare check.
The 63-year-old mayor also served as a pastor and is survived by his wife and three children.
The investigation into his death is ongoing amidst the controversy surrounding his secret life.
In the days leading up to his death, Copeland faced intense scrutiny after news articles revealed his online persona as a transgender woman.
On his 62nd birthday, 1819 News published a report exposing Copeland’s explicit content and photos as “Brittini Blaire Summerlin.”
The news outlet provided screenshots from Copeland’s now-deleted Instagram and Reddit accounts.
Other news outlets picked up the story, amplifying the controversy.
Copeland defended his actions, claiming it was a private hobby and did not affect his role as mayor or pastor.
“What I do in private life has nothing to do with what I do in my holy life,” Copeland said. “Does this have any effect on me being mayor, that I sometimes put on a dress or sometimes put on makeup? Does that have anything to do whatsoever with me being mayor or being a pastor?”
Copeland addressed the controversy during a church service, apologizing for any embarrassment caused by his private life becoming public.
“I have been an object of an internet attack,” Copeland said. “An article that was written about my capacity as the mayor [and] capacity as a pastor. The article is not who or what I am.”
Community members, including former Phenix City School Superintendent Dr. Larry DiChiara, expressed their anger and heartbreak over the public ridicule Copeland faced.
“I am so angry right now and heartbroken,” DiChiara posted. “I witnessed a good man be publicly ridiculed and crucified over the last few days…to the point that he just took his own life today.”
DiChiara had reached out to Copeland to offer support, knowing he was struggling.
“I knew he was suffering so I reached out to him yesterday and offered him support and encouragement,” DiChiara posted. “He was appreciative and acknowledged that he had been going through some “dark days” over the last few days. I just want to ask you people who thought it humorous to publicly ridicule him, “Are you happy now?” What crime did he commit?”
Cam Ward, director of Alabama Pardons and Paroles, expressed sadness over Copeland’s death and called for compassion.
In 2019, Copeland played a crucial role in the city’s recovery efforts after a devastating tornado struck a nearby town.
He met with then-President Donald Trump during that time to assess the damage.

“I am sorry if my actions have brought any shame or embarrassment to this community,” Copeland said. “But I will continue to serve as your mayor and pastor, because those are the roles I was called to fulfill.”
Despite his apology, the controversy intensified and the pressure mounted on Copeland.
Many members of the community expressed their anger and disappointment, feeling betrayed by their mayor and pastor.
Others defended Copeland, citing his right to privacy and his ability to separate his personal life from his public duties.
It is a tragic end to a story that brings into question the complexities of identity, privacy, and public perception.
The incident highlights the struggles faced by individuals who navigate the boundaries between their public and private lives, particularly in small communities.
For Copeland, keeping his private hobby a secret became increasingly difficult in the age of social media and easily accessible information.
The exposure of his online persona forced him to confront the clash between societal expectations and personal desires.
The tragedy of Copeland’s death serves as a somber reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and acceptance in our society.
It prompts us to question how we treat those whose identities may not conform to traditional norms, and how we can create an environment in which individuals feel safe expressing their true selves without fear of judgment or persecution.
As the investigation into Copeland’s death continues, there will no doubt be further discussions and debates about the complexities of identity, privacy, and mental health.
It is crucial that these conversations are approached with empathy and respect, seeking to promote understanding and support for all individuals, regardless of their personal choices or circumstances.
Ultimately, we must strive to create a society that embraces diversity and fosters inclusivity, rather than one that is quick to judge and condemn. In doing so, we can honor the memory of F.L. “Bubba” Copeland and prevent further tragedies.
